From Al Ain to Sharjah

Al Ain Oasis is one of the highlights of visiting Al Ain. It is Unesco World Heritage Site and the first one to be nominated as such in the UAE. It is irrigated with traditional falaj which is an ancient irrigation system. It gives water to 147.000 date palms and fruit trees and a land of 1200 hectares. Al Ain Palace Museum has been nicely restored and offers a beautiful site amongst date palms and cacti. It is a pleasure to wander around. Inside, you can visit the reception room where Sheikh Zayed, the founder of the UAE received guests. It was his residence from 1937 to 1966. You can even see his Land Rover that he used to go in the desert.

Al Jahili Fort is an historic building located in a beautiful park where it is very nice to walk around. It was built in the 1890s by Sheikh Zayed the first and has been renovated by the department of culture and tourism. You can visit inside, it houses a permanent exhibit about Sir Wilfried Thesiger, an explorer, photographer and travel writer who explored the Empty Quarter, the world's largest sand mass.

Have lunch at the Al Mallah restaurant and grill which serves typical Middle Eastern dishes like hummus, chicken shawarma and Lebanese staples.

Discover some ancient history at Mleiha archeological site. This place shows that humans from the Paleolithic era passed through here on their way to Asia and that a Neolithic community was here around 8000 years BC. You will learn more about it inside the visitor center and the museum with lots of interactive displays that children should like. You can take a tour to see the main attractions of the archeological site like caves, tombs and foundations of a fort and palace. You can get more information on their website.

Al Majaz waterfront is a great place for a stroll whether it is daytime or night time. Locals love to wander around here in the evening. Sharjah City which is the capital of the Emirate is very interesting, it has a lot of culture and museums. The Emirate of Sharjah is the most conservative of the UAE and you will not find alcohol at all in the Emirate.
