Culross Palace - The National Trust for Scotland
Culross Palace was built as the home of wealthy merchant Sir George Bruce over 400 years ago. Managed now by the National Trust for Scotland, you can explore the interiors, checking out the 17th and 18th century furniture and a fine collection of Staffordshire and Scottish pottery.
The palace has been used extensively during the filming of Outlander over the years, with the gardens used as Castle Leoch's herb garden and the Withdrawing Room acting as Geillis Duncan's parlour during season 1.
Season 2 saw Claire extract a womans tooth in the courtyard and Murtagh wait by the palace's main staircase for Jamie during his meeting with Bonnie Prince Charlie. The Palace High Hall was the setting for the Jacobite meeting where Jamie swears his allegiance to the prince, while the palace's Kings Room, kitchen and pantry were also used during filming.
Culross Palace makes a further appearance in season 4, playing the part of the inside of Laoghaire’s home.
Open Hours: 1 April - 30 September Monday - Sunday: 10:00 - 17:00
1 October - 31 October Monday - Sunday: 10:00 - 16:00
1 November - 31 March: Closed

Mercat Cross
After wandering through the historic streets of Culross, it won't come as a surprise that this village is the best example of a Scottish burgh of the 17th and 18th centuries. Culross started to grow rich on the extraction of coal during the century before, but hit harder times during the 19th century. Thankfully, the National Trust for Scotland has preserved and restored this settlement since the 1930's.
During season 1, Culross was used as the setting for Cranesmuir, the fictional town neighbouring Castle Leoch. Culross looks vibrant today, but for the filming, many of the buildings had to be painted dark grey. The Mercat Cross was used as the centre of Cranesmuir and you will easily recognise Geillis Duncan’s house at the small square. It was also here that Tammas was rescued by Jamie and Claire.
Culross took centre stage again in season 4 when Bree is rescued from the cold and brought outside a house just off the Mercat Cross.

Culross West Kirk
Take the short walk up from the village along country lanes to visit the ruined Culross West Kirk. The kirk acted as the local church from before the sixteenth century, being retired as a place of worship in 1633, when the Abbey Parish Church was used instead. The graveyard, however, was added to up until the end of the nineteenth century.
This atmospheric and dilapidated church took the form of the Benedictine abbey, the Black Kirk, in Outlander. It was at this wreck that Tammas fell seriously ill, with Claire saving the day as she realised that the 'wood garlic' he ate was actually lilly of the valley.

Falkland Palace & Garden
Having transformed a former hunting lodge into a spectacular Renaissance palace, King James V and future royals patronised Falkland for over a century. In 1654, however, the troops of Oliver Cromwell occupied the palace and started a fire, probably accidentally. It wasn't until the end of the nineteenth century that the palace was renovated and brought back to its former glory.
The palace makes a brief appearance in season 2 as the apothecary used by Claire where she meets Mary Hawkins.
Open Hours: 1 March - 31 October Monday - Sunday: 11:00 - 17:00
1 November - 28 February: Closed

Bruce Fountain
The quaint village of Falkland had a make over during season 1 of Outlander, being transformed into 1940's Inverness. Today's Covenanter Hotel became Mrs Baird's B&B, while other buildings around Bruce Fountain figured prominently.
The fountain is the very same one that the mysterious ghost-like figure of a Highlander lurks behind as he watches the bedroom occupied by Claire and Frank during their second honeymoon. Will Outlander fans discover who this figure was? Maybe, but you can reenact this famous scene by skulking around the fountain yourself.
After acting out the scene, explore some of Falkland's other streets, which were used in season 2. Brunton Street, Rotten Row and the mouth of Sharps Close, were used as Inverness in the lead up to the Battle of Culloden.
Filming again returned to Falkland, but with the previous locations used as Inverness being updated slightly.
