From Austria with love – Day 3: Wachau Valley on the Danube and the city of Linz

Today, you'll have to drive through a number of towns to reach the next stopover point, the city of Linz, but before you do, you'll stop in the famous Wachau Valley, which amazes with its scenic beauty and the vast Danube River. There you will also see majestic castles and monasteries with interesting history.

Very good morning at the Viennese coffee shop :) They come here to taste the delicious national Viennese sweets, as well as to taste the fragrant, qualitatively prepared white flute. Important: only cash is accepted. From Monday to Friday, the coffee shop is open from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., on Saturday later from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00.

St. Stephen's Cathedral is a symbol of Austria and has existed for over 700 years. The cathedral's high spire is visible to the whole of Vienna, and the Gothic style is incomparable. The cathedral is also known for its numerous relics. You can visit the cathedral from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, 7:00 a.m.

Dürnstein

Villages


Dürnstein is a small Austrian town or village in the Wachau Valley, but there are also some popular tourist destinations. The whole valley is on UNESCO's list. Here is the Augustinian monastery, built in the early 15th century, the symbol of the architectural ensemble of which is the church of Marie-Himmelphalt. The style of the church is baroque. The medieval castle, which towers above the city, was taken prisoner by King Richard the Lionheart of England when he returned from the third crusade.

Monasteries


This historic building is located in Fürth, Lower Austria, on a high hill south of the Danube. The Gottweig Monastery is a Benedictine monastery and is part of the Austrian Benedictine Congregation. There is a collegiate church, a choir chapel and a library. In the east wing there are cells of monks, and in the north wing there are a museum, an archive and two refectory rooms.

Grafenegg Castle, which you will see very close to the town of Krems, is very similar to Disneyland, but at the same time its architecture finds echoes of seven styles: Gothic, Biedermeier, Neo-Gothic, etc. The castle was built in the 14th century. A monumental tower towers over the neo-Gothic facade of the castle. Through the neo-Renaissance gate you can enter the main territory of Grafenegg, explore the 19th century chapel on the north side of the building The castle has a bizarre park where you can walk after visiting the main attraction.

Burgruine Aggstein

Historic Sites


The ruins of Aggstein Castle are among the most impressive in the Danube Valley. Unlike most other locks, you can drive up to the entrance by car. The castle was built in the 12th century and at that time was almost completely inaccessible, and was conquered many times and changed several owners. The views from the castle to the whole Wachau Valley are amazing!

Schallaburg

Just five kilometers from Melk you will notice the beautiful Renaissance castle of Schallaburg. Various exhibitions take place in Shallaburg. On them it is possible to see unique historical artifacts of many epochs, up to ancient Egyptians and Mongolian conquerors. An important element is the demonstration of the material dedicated to the signing of the 1955 agreement on Austria's independence and its development in the post-war years.
