Castles and Other Locations in Salzburger Land as Filming Sites for the Sound of Music

After a rich breakfast in the castle you can take a morning walk through the park.
Every day at 10.15 there is a guided tour of the castle, where you will learn all about the history of the castle and the people who lived and worked in it. A reservation for this is required. To do so, send an e-mail to [email protected].

Frohnburg Castle was the second castle used as a filming location in the musical The Sound of Music for the von Trapp family home. Today it is a venue for events and serves as student accommodation for students of the Mozarteum University.
Guided tours are not offered. However, because of its beautiful location in the Salzburg area, it is worth a short visit.

Here you can park the car for a visit to the park of Hellbrunn Palace.

The dance scene to the song "I am 16, going on 17" was filmed in front of this gazebo on the lakeside in Leopoldskron. Today, the gazebo stands in the park of Hellbrunn Palace.

In the Parkcafé Schloss Hellbrunn you can enjoy a light lunch (pizza, salads, toast) or coffee and cake. You can eat in the guest garden or in the guest parlor.

Pick up your vehicle for the onward journey to the Sound of Music Trail near Werfen.

Leave your car in the car park at Hohenwerfen Castle. From there, you can walk up the mountain on the Sound of Music Trail.

Walk a short distance on Bundesstraße 159 in the direction of Werfen and then turn right onto Schartenbergstraße. The hiking trail leads up the mountain to the spot that served as the filming location for the final scene in the musical The Sound of Music. There is a lookout point there. From the lookout point you have a beautiful view of Hohenwerfen Castle and the surrounding mountains.

Alternative: Hohenwerfen Castle
The hiking trail is not easy for everyone. If you have trouble hiking uphill, you can visit Hohenwerfen Adventure Castle instead. You can use the passenger elevator from the parking lot. Alternatively, there is a hiking trail that requires good footwear.

The interior of the castle is accessible only with a guided tour.
