    Craigmillar Castle

The imposing Craigmillar Castle has guarded the approach to Edinburgh for centuries and boasts one of the oldest tower houses in Scotland.
The castle has been inextricably linked with Mary Queen of Scots, since she used the castle as a sanctuary in 1566, however Craigmillar has received a resurgence in popularity since it became a filming location in the Outlander TV series.
In season 3 of the series, Craigmillar Castle took the guise of Ardsmuir Prison. Jamie was confined here with Murtagh and a group of captured Jacobites. Jamie went on to strike up a working relationship with the prison governor, Lord John Grey, using it to help his fellow prisoners.

    Roslin Glen Country Park

Walk through the ancient woodland of Roslin Glen Nature Reserve, navigating the path along the scenic banks of the River North Esk. The beauty of this reserve has inspired the likes of the artist JMW Turner and the diarist Dorothy Wordsworth.
The charm of this natural area also inspired the production team of Outlander, since it was this location that was used when, following her rescue from Fort William, Jamie argues with Claire, pointing out that her actions had led him and his friends into great danger.

    Battle of Prestonpans, 1745

The Battle of Prestonpans was fought on 21 September 1745 and is featured as an important milestone during season 2 of Outlander.
The battle was perhaps the most celebrated victories of Bonnie Prince Charlie, when the eager, but amateur Jacobite troops broke the government troops after making a Highland charge.
The elevated battle viewpoint will give you a panoramic view of the battlefield and there are story boards available to guide you through the events of the engagement.
Note that this is an historical site, and the filming for the battle in Outlander actually occured in Muiravonside Country Park.

    Preston Mill

One of the most unusual looking buildings in Scotland, Preston Mill, was the region's last working watermill, bing in use until 1959. There is also an interesting 16th century dovecot on the same estate, that housed 500 pigeons. It was the mill, however, that was used in one of the most memorable Outlander scenes in season 1. When the Redcoats came looking for Jamie, he is forced to dive under the mill wheel to avoid them. The mill also took the guise as a court ante-room when Geillis and Claire were accused of witchcraft. Note: even if the mill is closed to visitors, you can access the exterior of the mill and is still worth visiting.
