Vélez-Blanco Castle
Castillo de Vélez-Blanco was built by a man named Pedro Fajardo y Chacón. Construction began in 1506 and the castle was completed in 1515. After the Granada War, the Catholic Monarch gave Pedro the rank of First Marquis of Los Vélez.
Velez-Blanco's foundation was built upon Moorish fort that had previously "watched over" the town just below. Today, all that remains of the previous fort are the cistern and some of the original castle walls. Initially, when Pedro began building the castle, he had adopted a late Gothic style but then soon it was clear that the style had moved to an early Renaissance design. Several other architects had contributed to the design and structure of the castle, namely Florentian, Jacopo Florentino and Martín Milanés, who also had previously contributed to the construction and design of the Royal Chapel of Granada.
If you're lucky, you might be able to catch sight of several protected bird species flying high up and near the mountains that surround the area. Kindly take note that the town as well as the wildlife within the area have been declared by the government as a protected natural area. The town is beautiful, with clean streets, historic buildings and quaint white houses.
Opening Times: From April to September Wednesday - Sunday: 10:00 - 14:00, 17:00 - 20:00
From October 1 to March 31 Wednesday - Sunday: 10:00 - 14:00, 16:00 - 18:00
Access to the castle is free, you can find more information on the Andalucia website.

Alhambra
The Pearl Among the Emeralds is one of many nicknames given to the Alhambra because of its contrast against the lush green forest that surrounds it. It was initially designed as a military fortress but later became a Royal residence after the Kingdom of Nasrid had been established in the mid 13th century by the founding King Mohammed ibn Yusuf Ben Nasr, or more commonly known as, Alhamar. Over time, the Alhambra became a military fortress because of its geotactical position, primarily because it overlooked the entire city and also that it was guarded by natural elements that surrounded it.
It was in 1984, that the Alhambra, along with two other sites, namely the Albaicín (Albayzín) and the Generalife Garden went on to be declared World Heritage Sites because of their universal aesthetic qualities and outstanding mix of artistic styles from Moorish, Christian and Andalusian culture, not only that but the Alhambra has, throughout history, showcased the changes that occurred within the region over time by way of its evolving architectural decorative campaigns.
There are quite a lot of sites to see around the complex that served their own purpose, exploring this complex will take you approximately 3 hours. It's best to book your tickets online to avoid the crowds at the ticket office. Please make sure you arrive on the time as they do not accept people who arrive late.
