    In 1609, the then Viceroy of the Kingdom of Valencia decided to expel the Moors from the lands of Valencia, as they still preserved their culture and refused to convert to Christianity.
    More than 100,000 Moriscos had to go into forced exile in a matter of three days, and many of them were killed. This route takes you through the villages where they settled, recalling the legacy they left behind and which is still visible today.
    The Moorish Route passes through the villages of Cortes de Pallás, Cofrentes, Jalance and Jarafuel, in the Ayora valley, before making its last stop at the castle of Xativa. Fountains, irrigation channels, gardens, orchards, and castles are places to visit where the Moorish culture left its mark.

    The first day of the route has the first stop at one of the best preserved castles in the Valencian Community, the castle of Buñol. Did you know that it is inhabited inside and not by kings or dukes? Then the route goes into the Moorish villages, stopping at viewpoints over the reservoirs in Cortes de Pallas and a trek through the mountains to discover the remains of the castle of Chirel. The last stop is in Cofrentes with its castle hanging over the gorge of the reservoir.

    The second day of the route can be called the day of the castles. You will visit four castles where the Moors had a strong presence and left their legacy in the architecture and gardens. The castles of Cofrentes, Jalance and Jarafuel will be the first to be visited, culminating in the fortress of Xativa.
