On the first day of your route out of Ljubljana, you'll get to explore the wonderful town of Kamnik and many of the impressive sights it has to offer. You'll begin with a visit to a historic castle and a fishing lake with peaceful scenery before lunch in Kamnik.
After lunch, the spectacular park of Arboretum and its incredible landscaping and European heritage gardens await you. You'll also visit two castles within Kamnik, Zaprice and Little Castle, both loved for their own flair. You'll have a tasty dinner and stay in a beautiful guesthouse among nature.

Grad Jable
Your first stop on the route will be the wonderful Jable Castle, a restored and renovated medieval 16th-century castle on the edge of a rocky cliff. Entrance into the castle is only available for special events, so you'll only be able to see the exterior. However, it is well worth a trip as the architecture and history of the building against the beautiful mountain backdrop are a sight to remember.

Jezero Pristava
On the way to Menges town, stop at a beautiful and peaceful fishing lake - Jezero Pristava. I loved the calmness of this spot, as well as the different shades of green from the water itself and the trees surrounding the lake. You can stop in to get a dose of nature, watch the fisherman reeling in a fresh catch or read a book under the Slovenian sun.

Stari grad nad Kamnikom
Around midday, you'll enter the beautiful town of Kamnik, and a great starting point is the ruined castle of Kamnikom, which also has fantastic views over the city. Drive here once you enter Kamnik and park is the designated spot before walking the final path to find the ruins. There isn't a lot of the castle left, but it provides some great historical insights to help you understand the town before you enjoy the wonderful view.

Gostilnica in Kavarna Pri Podkvi
In Kamnik lives this great lunch spot that serves big hearty meals, but the best thing was the friendly service and warm atmosphere. There wasn't much choice in town, so this was a perfect find after a busy morning.
You can head to Gostilnica in Kavarna Pri Podkvi after your visit to the ruins and view spot for lunch. They're open for lunch every day of the week and there's no need to make a booking in advance.

After lunch, you'll get to see some of the best landscaping in Slovenia at the gorgeous garden park of Arboretum.
Through the 197 acres of garden, you can follow the paved or gravel pathways to view the blooming pockets of flowers, precisely cut hedges and wonderful grass and tree curations. This garden was part of a wealthy family estate in the 19th century and open to the public around 70 years ago.
Have a look at the official website to know more and buy rickets online in advance.

Zaprice Castle
Drive back to the centre of Kamnik to visit Zaprice Castle, an impressive feat of engineering, architecture and beauty to experience. The castle was built in the early 14th century and expanded ion in later centuries to become what you see today — a fortified, Baroque-style gem.
There's a museum inside, and you can visit it until 6 pm every day except for Sunday and Monday.

Little Castle
If you think three castles in one day is overkill, the third one is just as different as the previous two have been. Little Castle, or Male Grad, is a petite historical castle that still stands on top of the hill it was built on in the 11th century. It hosts one of the most important Slovene medieval monuments - the Romanesque chapel of St. Eligius - the oldest in Europe. You can visit every day of the week until 6 pm.

Gostilna Repnik, Primož Repnik s.p.
Dinner at Gostilna Repnik is the perfect way to wrap up a day o stunning scenery. I visited this restaurant after a long day, and it was the most welcome surprise — like a delicious, high-quality meal with central-European cuisine perfect for the mountain range experiences.
They're open for dinner Wednesday to Saturday and closed Sunday to Tuesday — you can make a booking through the contact details on their website or if you visit when they're closed, you can try the nearby Pri Cesarju pizzeria instead.
