Island Hopping from Zealand to Funen to Learn About The Vikings

The first stop from Copenhagen will be at the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum. This is home to the largest collection of Viking ships that have been found by archaeologists in the area. There are 5 ships on display at the museum, each telling its own unique story about its past voyages.

Drive into the city of Roskilde and park up so you can explore the city on foot. Roskilde is famous not only for the Viking Museum but also for its Gothic cathedral, which is the burial site for many Danish kings and queens.

Roskilde Cathedral is a spectacular site to see with its gothic twin-spired structure and tombs that lay beneath the beautiful interior. It is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After visiting the Cathedral, take a casual stroll through Roskilde Bypark before lunch. The park starts in the city center and continues to the waterfront where you can see the harbour and fjord.

Pipers Hus is a cute café located in the Bypark and serves a selection of hearty Danish dishes. Once you have had lunch, return to the car to head to the next destination.

Sorø Lake is the largest of three lakes that almost surround the town of Sorø. Enjoy a stretch break here with a walk around the lake and admire the natural beauty of this area. There is also a small animal park with goats, chickens and a children's play area with wooden huts.

When you return on the road, you will cross The Great Belt Bridge, connecting the islands of Zealand and Funen. This bridge is significant as it is the third largest suspension bridge in the world and the longest outside of Asia. It has a length of around 1,624 meters, and on a clear day, you will have some spectacular views of the islands from it. Be aware that this is a toll bridge that you will pay at the end.

The next stop will be in Nyborg, so park up next to the waterfront and take a stroll through the 12th century town to where you will have dinner. The town is famous for its castle so why not take a walk around to see some of the ancient buildings.

Sneppen is a local restaurant serving up some of the best cuisines in town. The restaurant has a smart causal vibe and is the perfect place for those who enjoy well-presented food.
