Lush Landscapes in the Mullerthal Region

Welcome to the first day of this route through Luxembourg! Are you ready to get to know one of the most beautiful natural areas of the country?
This day's proposal is to visit the Müllerthal area (which some call Little Switzerland). Throughout the area there are many hiking trails to see waterfalls, go through forests and be amazed by the rock formations.
The Müllerthal area offers three main hiking trails (known as trails 1, 2 and 3) and four secondary trails (known as ExtraTour A, B, C and D). As the trails are long, the suggestion is that you do some of them. I will give you some suggestions, but you decide the final route. A real adventure!
The proposal is to spend the morning around the village of Mullerhal to walk and see a beautiful waterfall, and the afternoon in the village of Echternach, where you will spend the night. In Echternach, you can choose to spend the afternoon at a lake and walk the trail around it. Or walk along some sections of the main routes 1 and 2 of the Mullerthal Trail.
    Ready to hit the trail?
Don't forget to wear comfortable hiking shoes and clothes. And always have water, fruit and snacks with you.

    Parking Schiessentümpel

After only half an hour's drive, you will be on a road surrounded by green trees. Leave the car in this car park to be able to make the first hike. There is an information sign and directions to the trailhead right there. Otherwise, remember that whenever you are on a trail it is always good to ask whoever you meet if you are on the right path.
The purpose of this hike is to get to know the Schiessentümpel waterfall.
If you can't find a place in this area, you can drive to the small village of Mullerthal and leave your car there. The village is very small and you will easily find the tourist office where you can get information. All the trails are also well marked. From there you can also take a number of routes. You can look for the route to the Schiessentümpel waterfall.

On the way you will pass a beautiful wooden staircase from where you can take some nice pictures. All Mullerthal Trails are also marked and signposted.

    Schiessentümpel/ Schéissendëmpel Waterfall

Welcome to the Schiessentümpel Waterfall! Be sure to take a picture of the "three waterfalls" and the wooden bridge and log bridge above! Although it is not a huge waterfall, the surroundings are very beautiful and the way to get there is very easy.

    Parking A Kack

Welcome to Echternach, the regional capital. Leave your car in one of the car parks and start your tour of this picturesque town. The first recommendation is to go to the tourist office to find out more about the routes you can take during the afternoon. Below you will find a link with all the information you need.

    Echternach Tourist Office

At the tourist office you can ask for maps and find out about routes to do during the afternoon, after walking around the town and having lunch. If you want to do some research beforehand, you can check out the official Mullerthal hiking trails website. There you will see a map with marked routes. There are, as we said, three main routes and four extra ones.
Open Hours Wednesday - Sunday: 9:00 - 12:00, 13:30-17:00 Monday and Tuesday: 13:30-17:00 If you travel on Monday or Tuesday, you can first take a walk around the village and have lunch and then visit the tourist office.

    Abbey of Echternach

Before lunch, I recommend a stroll through the village. There are not many buildings to see, but it is worth a walk because it is a beautiful village. One of the sites you can see is the abbey, which was rebuilt in the 18th century.
You can see the opening hours at this link, although the idea is to have a look around the outside.

    Église Saints-Pierre-et Paul

Another city's main buildings is the Church of Peter and Paul. As it is located on an elevation, I recommend you climb up to get a nice view of the abbey and its gardens. If it is open, you can go inside to see the interior.

    Place du marché

Then take a stroll around the Plaza del Mercado, the town's main square, where the Town Hall building, a fountain and several cafés are located. When we went there we were told that in summer there is usually a market where you can buy typical products, but we didn't get to see it.

    Carli's Coffee

There's nothing better than finding a nice place to eat lunch. I really liked this café. While it has more breakfast options, you can also have a brunch (very delicious!) or a lunch.
Open Hours Wednesday - Friday: 9.00-17.00 (kitchen is closing at 14.10) Saturday: 9.00-16.00 (kitchen is closing at 14.10) Sunday Brunch on reservation only: 9:30-12.20, 12.30-15.00

    Randonnée E1 Echternach

I mark this point on the map but it is not necessarily the point from where you are going to walk. The idea is that after lunch you choose one of these options:
✅Do a part of route 1. You can see it here.
✅Do part of route 2. You can see it here.
I say part of the route because they are routes of more than 30 km each. And if you only see a part of them, you will see how beautiful the landscape is.
✅Visit Lake Echternach. You can either walk along the shore or take the path around the lake, which is also very nice and easier than the other routes.
Whichever option you choose, the proposal is that you spend between 3.5 and 4 hours. Keep in mind that the main routes are circular, but you are not going to do them in their entirety, so you will have to take into account the return journey time.

    Lakeside Echternach

To end the day in the best possible way, you can dine at this lakeside restaurant and reminisce about the beautiful moments of the day and the hikes.
Here you can enjoy contemporary food, with local products and the chefs' touch. There are very good meat and vegetable dishes.
