Stepping Back in Time

This impressive medieval ruined castle overlooking the ancient city was built on a mountain ridge in the Taunus, surrounded by castle moats, fortifications and flank towers. Its history, displayed in the castle museum, dates back to 14th century and was the estate of the renowned Eppstein family. Today it is known more as a venue for music festivals and concerts. The tower offers incredible views of the town and the upper level of the castle serves as a beer garden.

The hilltop site of this 9th and 10th-century fortress was originally settled around 4,000 BC. The existing fortress was built on the footprint of an earlier fortress destroyed by the French in 1801.
