It's an early start to make it to the beach! Pack up the kids (and some snacks!) and hit the road to make the most of this day.
There are plenty of gas stations and rest areas to stop and stretch along the way.

Very central underground parking lot with everything in easy walking distance. From here you'll navigate the pedestrian-only streets of the old town as you make your way to the Castillo de San Miguel.
There are a variety of suggestions of things to do listed in the most orderly fashion, but if you'd rather just hit the beach, there's a children's playground, beach and cafes just above the parking garage!

This structure was first started by the Phoenicians, then the Romans and finally the Moors built the fortress you are now visiting.
The Castillo stands majestically on the highest point of Almunecar where it protected the town below from invaders.
Inside you'll learn about the history of the castle and there's a short film that will delight the children. It's the perfect size for kids to explore as they examine the miniature models of what the city used to look like and thrill at the intact canons and gun ports surrounding them.

An easy walk down the hill from the Castillo, the kids will have plenty of space to play and run wild amongst the fountains, tropical plants and many sculptures.
A teachable moment lies at the back of the park where you can view the ruins and learn about the rich history of the Phoenicians and Romans who used this area as a fish salting factory.
Many artisans have stalls here housing their crafts and there are food and beverage vendors as well.

Adjacent to the El Majuelo Botanical Park and below the Castillo you'll find this delightful park with over 100 birds species to learn about.
With more than 1,500 birds, including peacocks and parrots, this place is quite the noisy, good time!

Return to the car and head to Nerja, one of the cutest white pueblos of the Costa Tropical.

This underground lot is perfectly positioned for your time to explore Nerja by foot.

This popular restaurant opens earlier than normal Spanish times making it a great place for kids to dine on wood-fired pizza and parents to enjoy pasta and other Italian specialities.
