Cultural Visit and Scenic Route

The sanctuary of Saint Michael incorporates several religious buildings. There is a grotto where Saint Michael is said to have left a footprint in stone. That is why Monte Sant Angelo is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Just a few stairs across the sanctuary, you will find this baptistery from the 12th century. It has a deep sunken basin for full immersion.

This castle sits on the top of the hill at the highest point of Mont Sant Angelo. You will get spectacular views from there. The tower dates back from the 10th century, but the rest is Norman, Swabian and Aragonese.

When you leave Monte San Angelo, follow the scenic coastal road for amazing views. It takes longer than the main road, but you will enjoy great views with cliffs and beaches. You can stop at any beach you want on the way to go take pictures or enjoy a swim. This one is one amongst many beautiful beaches on the coast. Enjoy the sea to refresh after visiting sites in the heat if you visit in summer.

Keep driving on the beautiful coastal road until Vieste. Stop at this monolith, which is the most famous site of Vieste. The drive until there along the beach is also very nice. Then you can enjoy the beach, have a walk or swim before going to the sunset point.
