Go West! Gallup to Flagstaff

First stop today is the otherworldly Petrified Forest National Park, conveniently located off of Interstate 40. In just an hour you can drive through the park and stop at a few of the overlooks.
Named for the large deposits of petrified wood found in the area, it's also the only park in the national park system with a section of Route 66 in it.
There are many interesting things to see and do in the park. A few of the more outstanding are linked below.
The park is open every day 8 am - 6 pm. Note: Arizona doesn't recognize Daylight Savings so the park is an hour earlier than New Mexico, Utah, and the Navajo Nation.

Visit the centuries old Newspaper Rock. This area is an exceptional example of over 650 petroglyphs or rock carvings, covering a group of rockfaces.

The Blue Mesa area in Petrified National Forest National Park looks like it's from a different planet. Walk as much or as little as you like on the relatively easy paved paths to discover a bounty of blue, gray pink and purple hills. Even if you don't get out to walk, the drive to the trailhead is gorgeous.

Don't miss this unique museum and the opportunity to see a real working paleo lab. Inside this historic building are paleontological exhibits and skeleton displays of prehistoric animals. Outside are walking paths with some of the finest petrified wood specimens in the park. You can even watch the park movie and buy souvenirs in the bookstore.

To access the interstate again, the drive through the park ends in the small town of Holbrook. While there, don't miss the Route 66 Wigwam Motel that features rooms that look like tips. Built in the 1930's and 1940's, the Wigwam Motel is a step back in time and even has some classic cars sitting around.

Lunch is tasty burritos from Aliberto's Mexico Food. Choose to dine in or order to-go if you think you need to charge the vehicle again.

Winslow, Arizona is another Route 66 town made famous by the American rock band The Eagles, when they sang about "standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona" in their hit song Take it Easy.
Stop to get your photo taken at the famous corner and see other Route 66 sights around the cute historic downtown.
