    Across the Mountains to Route 66

    Nestled in the San Juan mountains, day one starts in the small silver mining town of Durango, Colorado. The road trip route continues south through New Mexico and across the Navajo Nation with stops in Farmington and Gallup, New Mexico while visiting a couple of national park sites along the way.
    The route is mostly secondary roads and there's a quick stop to charge the vehicle since the route is approximately 165 miles one way between Durango and Gallup to allow for any extra stops.
    Remember to wear comfortable shoes for the walking and outdoor activities.

    After crossing the state line into New Mexico, the first stop of the day is Aztec Ruins National Monument. This lesser known national park site is an important Puebloan site, featuring a 900-year-old ancestral Pueblo Great House made up of over 400 masonry rooms.
    The park is a fee free park, and it is open every day open 8am - 6pm June - September and 9am - 5pm October - May, but check the National Park Service website for hours and a park map.
