Birds, Tarpon, and Chocolate: Another Day in the Florida Keys

Start your morning kayaking or stand up paddling just offshore of Bungalows Key Largo. Or perhaps you prefer to a yoga practice in the tranquil setting. Whichever way you decide to start your day, it's going to be another good day in the Florida Keys.

After checking out of the hotel, drive south along for about half an hour to Midway Cafe, a locals' favorite spot to stop and fuel up for the day. The breakfast burrito and egg pita will surely fill you up, or order a smoothie and grab a pastry to-go.

If you're a SCUBA diver, or simply interested in the undersea world, it's worth paying a visit to the History of Diving Museum. Inside is one of the world’s largest collections of diving helmets, armored suits, memorabilia, and more, all part of a personal collection that took more than 40 years to curate.

About 100 or so tarpon head to the docks at Robbie's each day to eagerly await the fish that visitors feed them right from their hands. The tradition dates back to 1976 when Robbie and his wife Mona nursed a tarpon back to health and started feeding him from the very same docks.

Feeding the tarpon at Robbie's may make you hungry, too, so it's time for lunch at, well, the aptly-named Hungry Tarpon Restaurant. The casual, waterside restaurant features fresh, signature seafood dishes like fish or tuna tacos, a shrimp burrito, cracked conch, or Thai-style mahi fish fingers.

Make your way further to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center and the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary housed within. The team who oversees the center and the sanctuary care for injured or displaced native and migratory wild birds, giving them a home to live out their lives in a safe, caring space. More than 90 non-releasable birds of nearly 40 different species call the sanctuary home.

Before starting back, pop into Key Largo Chocolates & Ice Creams for a sweet treat. The longtime chocolate maker’s truffles have fans around the world, and one bite in and you’ll see why for yourself.
