- Wander the narrow, maze-like streets of Medieval Trogir.
- Discover the mini-village hidden inside Kastel Gomilica’s fortress.
- Check out the views from the top of imposing Klis castle.
- Feast on tender roast lamb cooked under a ‘bell’.
With viewing figures of around 44 million, and winner of almost 60 Emmy awards, the TV series Game of Thrones was one of the world’s most popular fantasy dramas. Many of the episodes were filmed in Croatia, almost doubling visitor numbers as tourists flocked to Split and Dubrovnik to check out the locations of some of their favourite scenes.
With the new prequel now showing on HBO, the appetite for checking out Croatian film locations is as popular as ever and this 1-day trip visits three places from the original series: the historic town of Trogir, the imposing Klis fortress, and the pretty village of Kastel Gomilica.
Of course, you don’t have to be a fan of Game of Thrones to enjoy this trip. Trogir is a stunningly beautiful Medieval town and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Klis is a really cool hilltop fortress with wonderful views, and Kastel Gomilica is a small and very pretty fishing village with an even smaller ‘mini-village’ hiding inside.

Dragons, Slave Cities & The ‘Faceless’
This trip starts with a drive up the coast to the beautiful Medieval town of Trogir where you will spend the morning exploring its narrow, maze-like streets and historic sights. Lunch is in a laid-back beach restaurant in a pretty bay, after which you’ll drive east to check out Kastel Gomilica and the mini-village hidden inside the fortress. Next, you’ll drive inland to visit the imposing Klis fortress before heading out to your final stop at Žrnovnica where you’ll have dinner in an old flour mill; also a Game of Thrones film location.
Marina Trogir Parking
Trogir is one of my favourite towns along the Dalmatia coast; it is extraordinarily beautiful. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, the old town is squeezed onto a tiny islet, surrounded by high fortified walls. Built on the foundations of a 3rd Century Greek-Roman city, Trogir has been continuously inhabited for over 2,300 years and has some stunning Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Its narrow and winding maze-like streets are really fun to explore and it’s one of those places where every corner you turn reveals an Instagram-worthy sight.
It's no surprise then that Trogir’s alter ego in Game of Thrones (GoT) is Qarth, 'the greatest city that ever was or will be'. Featuring in Season 2, Qarth is the city where Daenerys’ dragons were stolen by the Qarth warlocks.
Check out the lovely view of the old town across the marina from here.

Church and monastery of St. Dominic
Built in the 13th Century, St Dominic’s Monastery is one of the town’s landmarks, overlooking the palm-tree lined promenade. Some of the GoT scenes were filmed in and around this building. It’s worth paying the small entrance fee if only to check out the lovely Mediterranean garden hidden inside its walls.

Kamerlengo Castle
Further along the promenade, this 15th Century fortress was built by the Venetians to protect the city from invaders. There’s not much to see inside; its main attraction is the view. Buy an entry ticket to gain access to the perimeter walls and towers for fantastic views of the marina and harbour, old town, and surrounding hills.

Market place
Opposite the ancient North Gate and over the bridge is the bustling, riverside outdoor market. This is a good place to buy local cheeses and cured meats; look out for the famous Pag cheese, and also Krčki pršut – a delicious unsmoked prosciutto that is dry-salted and flavoured with pepper, rosemary, and bay leaf.

Marina Trogir Parking
Trogir is known as the ‘Stone Beauty’ because of its concentration of historic structures and buildings. As you wander back to the car through the centre take your time to look up and around to truly appreciate the architectural beauty of this unique Medieval town. En route stop for a drink at one of the many picturesque cafes.

Stari Resnik
Situated in a tiny bay, this place is the archetypal beach bar, where the chairs sink into the pebbly sand, the beer is ice cold, and you’re a stone’s throw away from jumping into the sea. And the food is pretty good too! Freshly made pizzas, tasty salads and grilled meats.

Kaštilac
Kaštel Gomilica is a pretty, traditional fishing village with a very unique fortress that juts out into the sea and is accessed via a stone causeway and wooden drawbridge. It’s so unusual that it looks like it was constructed specifically for GoT; in reality, it was built by Benedictine nuns in the Middle Ages to protect the village from the Ottomans.
Kastel Gomilica is Braavos port in GoT in Series 5 where Arya escapes to Braavos to train to become a ‘faceless’. It is here, next to the fortress, where she poses as a shellfish seller. Walk across the causeway into the fortress and check out the tiny village hidden inside. Although originally a nunnery, the buildings are now residential homes.

Klis Fortress
This well-preserved Medieval fortress sits at the top of a craggy mountain and has incredible views of the valley below and the coastline. Built in the 16th Century to safeguard against an Ottoman invasion (which was unsuccessful) and then later re-taken and extended by the Venetians, its austere stone walls and turreted gate is easily recognisable as the slave city of Meereen which is conquered by Daenarys and her army in Seasons 4 and 5. The fortress appears again in Season 6 where Tyrion and Varys are seen walking along the streets dressed as peasants.
Buy a ticket at the entrance gate to enter the castle and head to the small, dome-topped (it was converted to a mosque by the Ottomans) church in the centre, for breath-taking views across to Split and nearby islands. There’s also a display of stills from GoT in one of the fortress rooms that’s worth checking out.

Seosko Gospodarstvo Antoničin Mlin
Housed in a 19th Century (and still working) flour mill, this lovely riverside restaurant serves hearty plates of traditional Dalmatian cooking. Try their ‘peka’ – meat that is slow-roasted on an open fire under a dome-shaped ‘bell’ (lid). The meat is mouth-wateringly tender and full of flavour. If it’s a warm evening, grab a seat in the restaurant’s garden. If you’re wondering why it looks familiar, this is where Daenerys’ servant, Missandei, goes skinny dipping with her friends, watched by Grey Worm, in GoT Season 4.
Before you leave, take a look at some of their products for sale including the milled flour and olive oil from their vineyard.
