Chelva: Trekking Along the Water Route, Viewpoints and Springs.

The second day of the route takes us to the village of Chelva, a place where the Arabs left their mark. The Water Route is its main attraction, a circular route that combines history and nature along the banks of the river Chelva.
On the way back to Valencia, there are three more stops. The first one is the Roman aqueduct in the middle of the mountains, a natural site on the banks of the river Turia and the village of Lliria with Iberian, Roman and medieval remains.

    Fuente de la Gitana

A foretaste of what you will see later on, the water as a protagonist. Established by the Muslims who had water as one of their landscape resources par excellence, this fountain has more than 20 drinking water spouts and the image of a gypsy woman in the middle of it.
Its decorative mosaics denote the traces of the passage of the Arabs through this place. You just have to be quiet and listen to the sound of the water falling through the jets.

    Ruta de l'Aigua

On this circular route you will hear the sound of water at every moment, even when you do not go along the river Chelva.
The Water Route was designed to get to know all the attractions of Chelva. It starts in the main square, goes through the old Arab, Christian and Jewish quarters, where the original layout remains almost unchanged, and then enters the nature following the course of the river Chelva. At the beginning you will come across fountains and old washing places.
The sound of water will accompany you through the trees to reach the recreational area of Molino Puerto and then the Playeta with its small waterfalls and natural pools. The Olinches tunnel excavated in the rock and the old hydroelectric power station are the last stops to return to the Plaza Mayor.
This route can be done with children, there are picnic areas and bathing areas.

    Conrado Brasa Bar

After about three hours of walking, it is time to sit down to eat. And what better place to do it than in this restaurant!
You can start with starters such as the Chelvano tripe or the charcuterie platter. For the main course there are several options to eat grilled: vegetables, chicken, meat, fish, octopus and squid.
For those visiting Chelva with children, there is a good children's menu with hamburgers and chips.
    Open Hours: Tuesday to Saturday: 7:00 – 16:00. Also, Friday and Saturday: 20:30 – 22:00. Sunday: 8:00 - 16:00.
After tasting regional dishes in the restaurant, it's a five-minute walk back to the car park for a meal.

    Peña cortada

It's time to take the car again to go to a historical relic, a Roman aqueduct from the 1st century.
From the car park, it is only a few minutes walk to reach this marvel.

    Peña Cortada

It does not seem real that a 1st century construction surrounded by mountains is still in good condition. You can walk over the aqueduct, but be careful as there are no railings or protection, and then continue along the narrow path between rock walls through the galleries that served as a passage for the water.
On the way you will find tunnels dug in the rock and of course the views of the mountain range.
The trek from the car park can be done in half an hour. There is a hiking route from the village of Calles to the aqueduct, which takes about four hours.
After visiting the aqueduct in 10 minutes walk you return to the car park to continue on your way.

    Mirador de Domeño Viejo

Obligatory stop on the way back to Valencia. At the side of the road there is a place to park the car and enjoy the views.
From the viewpoint you can see the reservoir formed by the river Turia with trees submerged in the water, the mountains that surround it and in the background the waterfall about 10 metres high.

    Lliria

A visit to the city is probably worth a whole day to make the most of it and discover the Iberian, Roman, and Arab sites.
But a short stop is also worthwhile, especially to stroll through the centre and visit the imposing Church of La Asunción.
It is actually a façade, but it is also a stone altarpiece, a true work of art. The blue-toned exterior dome and the luxurious vault complement the beauty of the place. Although the two side towers originally planned have not yet been built!
    Open Hours: Monday to Saturday: 18:00 - 20:30. Sunday: 8:00 - 13:00.

    La Cafe

A bit of an appetite? One of the few places open in Lliria for an early bite to eat before heading back to Valencia. Tapas and sandwiches to try and come back with a full belly.
    Open Hours: Wednesday to Sunday: 8:00 - 14:30, 19:00 - 0:30.
After dinner, it is a 10-minute walk to the parking to pick up the car and return to Valencia.
