    • Visit a Roman gladiator training school and the site of an ancient Oracle.
    • Satisfy your sweet tooth with some Turkish Delight and sesame ‘fudge’.
    • Sample some award-winning, and more ‘traditional’ wines.
    • Get scrubbed squeaky clean in a traditional hammam.
    • Learn about the traditions of carpet-making and olive oil production.
This four-day road trip is packed full of sights and experiences. It’ll take you back to ancient Roman times where you can imagine being a gladiator at the training school and fighting in one of the huge stadiums. Or you may prefer to be a Roman scholar, visiting the grand library at Ephesus, or a pilgrim trekking to Didim to hear the prophesies of the Oracle, or even a wealthy merchant sponsoring the building of a new temple at Euromos.
As well as visiting some of the best archaeological sites in the region, you’ll also learn about olive oil and carpets, and there’s also Izmir’s bustling market, a traditional carpet-making village, and a spooky bat cave to check out. For ‘fun’ activities, there’s a traditional hammam (Turkish bath) experience, an underground swimming pool, and a chance to walk across the sea to an island.
All great road trips should also include food & drink and, on this trip, you can try Turkish ‘pizza’ and ‘pasties’, an ‘all-day breakfast’ and the slightly more unusual brains ‘sandwich’. To wash it down, there’s some award-winning wines to taste, as well as a more ‘local’ fruit wine – the kind you get in a village fete.

The Finest Ancient Temples in the Aegean

This four-day journey begins with some carpets. Turkish carpets are sought after worldwide and this morning you’ll find out why. Also today, you’ll get a chance to walk on water, check out a giant bat cave, and wander the overgrown ruins of ancient Euromos.

A Trip to Zeus’ Man-Cave and a Gladiators’ Stadium

Today there’s another ancient temple (even better than yesterday’s) another cave (this one has a swimming pool rather than bats!) and a giant Roman amphitheater. You’ll also get to try a Turkish ‘all-day breakfast’, learn all about olive oil, and watch the sun set over the Aegean Sea.

Food, Glorious Food – and Wine!

Today is a foodie day. On the menu there’s some boiled brains (nicer than its sounds), artfully stuffed vegetables, lots of sticky sweets and a selection of fruit wines. You’ll also get to explore a Byzantine fortress, check out the grand bazaar in Izmir, and get soaped up in one of Türkiye’s oldest hammams.

    Visit the Library, Eat Pizza

It’s the last day of the trip and a chance to see one of the best-preserved Roman cities in Türkiye – the great Ephesus – as well as Stratonikeia, a relative newbie to the antiquities ‘scene’. To round out the day, there’s some fantastic Turkish street food to try, as well as some wine tasting.
