On the way on the Black Forest High Road: waterfalls, Mummelsee and Hornisgrinde

Your road trip today will take you from the big city into the heart of Germany's highest low mountain range. Arriving in the Black Forest, you will drive through the mountainous landscape with its dense coniferous forests and quaint villages. Your first stop is the All Saints Waterfalls. Hike through a picturesque gorge along the waterfalls to the monastery ruins. Then drive along the Black Forest High Road to Mummelsee. Take a tour around the small mountain lake and hike up to the Hornisgrinde, the highest mountain in the northern Black Forest, in about 30 minutes. From here you can enjoy great views and hike through the high moor before ending the day with a delicious dinner in Sasbachwalden.

    Marktplatz Freudenstadt

On your trip through the Black Forest, you'll drive right past Germany's largest marketplace in Freudenstadt! Take a look at the huge square surrounded by historic buildings as you drive by.

    All Saints Waterfalls

Your first stop is the Allerheiligen Wasserfälle, which are among the most beautiful and highest waterfalls in the Black Forest. From the parking lot at the main entrance of the waterfalls, a hiking trail leads you through a picturesque gorge in the forest over stairs and bridges along the waterfalls. The circular trail leads up to the ruins of the Allerheiligen monastery and back again.

    Klosterruine Allerheiligen

Above the Allerheiligen waterfalls lie the remains of the early Gothic monastery of Allerheiligen, which was founded as early as the 12th century. The freely accessible ruins have an idyllic location in a valley and the towering wall remains make a picturesque picture. You should not miss the ruin if you are on the waterfall circuit!

For lunch, you can stop at the restaurant located at the top of the waterfall circuit next to the monastery ruins. On the menu are seasonal and local specialties ranging from Black Forest vesper platter, game and trout to coffee and cake. In summer you can sit outside nicely on the beer garden terrace.

    Mummelsee

Along the Black Forest High Road you continue to the Mummelsee. Located at over 1,000 meters above sea level, this mountain lake is one of the most popular attractions in the Black Forest. Accordingly, it can get crowded here - it's best if you come during the week. A beautiful wooden plank path leads in the forest once around the small lake. Take a picnic with you and sit on the lakeshore or go for a pedal boat ride. Afterwards, you should hike from the lake up to the Hornisgrinde in about 30 minutes. From here you have the best view of the lake from above!

    Grinde-Hütte

A short, approx. half-hour hike leads from Lake Mummel up to the high plateau of the Hornisgrinde, the highest mountain in the northern Black Forest at 1,165 meters. Once at the top, the Grinde Hut awaits you for a stop. The modernized mountain hut is located directly next to the Hornisgrinde tower and invites hikers with its cozy furnishings and the magnificent panorama to take a break and enjoy Black Forest specialties.

    Hornisgrindeturm

Now climb the Hornisgrinde tower - from up here you have a great view! Afterwards, you should walk a bit through the treeless high moor on the Hornisgrinde, which you can hike through on a wooden plank path. It's interesting to note that the Hornisgrinde was once a restricted military area: the French military operated a listening station here after the end of World War II, for example. You can still see the remains.

    Hotel Restaurant Der Engel, Sasbachwalden

On the western slopes below the Hornisgrinde, nestled between vineyards, lies the "flower and wine village" of Sasbachwalden. Here you will spend the next two nights at the Hotel Engel. The hotel is centrally located in a historic half-timbered house and has cozy, beautifully renovated rooms. I recommend a room with its own balcony or terrace!
Treat yourself today to a really nice dinner with a great menu in the restaurant of the Hotel Engel. Here you can eat very well, but you should definitely book in advance. On the menu are fine regional specialties and regional wines. In summer you can also sit outside.
