About the bogatyrs and the khans: where the past ends and the story begins.

On this day you will meet the heroes of Russian bylinas and fairy tales. In Kasimov you will learn that the khans lived not only in the Golden Horde and climb the minaret of the XV century. You'll also visit the homeland of Russian heroes - the city of Murom. You'll learn that Ilya Muromets is not a legendary character, but a real man (the bravest can touch the cancer with its relics); you'll see the place where Ivan the Terrible prayed before his campaign to Kazan and the church with "wet legs".

Further along the picturesque Oka coast, head for the Khan Mosque (the round high tower of the minaret will serve as a guide).
The origin of this mosque is still unknown. According to one data, it was founded in the XV century by Tsarevich Kasim, the first ruler of the Kasim Khanate; according to others, the mosque was erected in the XVI century by Shah-Ali Khan. Besides, there is a version that they were both involved in the construction: under Shah-Ali khan they simply rebuilt the first mosque of Tsarevich Qasim. Only one thing is certain: only a minaret has survived from the old building, and the mosque itself was dismantled at the command of Peter the Great, who, according to the legend, passing by the Oka mosque, took it as a church and crossed it. Realizing the mistake, the king ordered to get the Horde temple out of sight.
At the end of the XVIII century, by order of Catherine, a stone one-storey mosque with a four-storey roof was built on the same foundation, and at the beginning of the XIX century the building was added a second floor made of bricks, the interior rooms were finished with marble. Khan's Mosque has been preserved in this form till nowadays.
In autumn, spring and summer you can climb the minaret and enjoy a panoramic view of the river and the city.
From the Mosque we walk to the Museum of Samovars, near which the car is parked, and go to a new point of our journey - the city of Moore.

    Holy Annunciation Monastery

    Monastery
    Open Details
This is the very first and most interesting of Murom's monasteries. Its history begins at the turn of XI-XII centuries and is connected with names of Murom princes - Prince Konstantin (Yaroslav) Svyatoslavich and his sons: Michael and Fedor. In the "Story of the introduction of Christianity in Murom" (XVI century) says that the Murom pagans, unwilling to accept Christianity, killed Michael and Theodor, who defended the princely chambers. Towards the crowd came out Constantine with the icon of the Mother of God in his hands. The image has shone, and the pagans struck by miracle have accepted Christianity and have repented of atrocity. Further the icon of the Mother of God of the Greek letter, brought by prince from Byzantium, began to be called Murom.
The temple is also interesting because since 1552 Ivan IV the Terrible prayed here before his campaign to Kazan. He promised to build several temples in the city in case of victory over Kazan, and in 1553 on the site of an old wooden church was built a magnificent stone Annunciation Cathedral, where the relics of St. Constantine, Michael and Theodore were moved. Thus was founded the Annunciation Monastery, which enjoyed the highest patronage of the king. Ivan Vasilyevich allocated to the monastery funds from the state treasury, land ownership, sent the rich church utensils.
Now in the monastery there are icons of the Mother of God of the ancient writing: "Iberian", "Sign", "Goat".

    Church
    Open Details
The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, who is revered by the people as the savior of the drowning, the patron saint of floating and traveling. Therefore, this temple was built by the water. Presumably, the first temple was built on this site in the XVI century by order of Ivan the Terrible.
At the foot of the mountain, under the temple is Nikolsky spring - the most revered among the people. According to the legend, Nikolai the Wonderworker himself appeared at the spring several times, and water has healing power. It is believed that the underground stream washes the silver cross, laid at the base of the temple, before reaching the surface. Nearby, in the ravine, there is a chapel in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Lifebearing Spring".
