Heading North
Today, you will make your way north of Boka Bay and head into Montenegro's iconic mountains. Your first stop will be in the town of Niksic (home of Niksico beer!)
You'll notice that life outside the bay area feel decidedly different. The rugged landscapes and hearty mountain food give the impression of almost being in an entirely separate country!
You'll be visiting some beautiful local landmarks and staying in a fantastic little cottage!

Slano jezero - Vidikovac
Head north up some heart-stopping mountain roads!
As you head north, make sure to enjoy the spectacular views of Boka Bay before it disappears out of sight.
As you near the town of Niksic you will be greeted by the beautiful Slansko Lake, a sprawling body of water dotted with islands and a favorite summer spot for locals!
Pull off the road and stop at the marked spot for a great view across the lake and a chance to get a wonderful picture across the valley.

Slano Lake Off Road
Make your way around the lake to the southern shoreline.
Like almost everywhere in Montenegro, parking can be a bit tricky! There are no official parking areas, but there is generally space along the road if you hunt for it!
Once you're parked, make your way down to the lakeside. There is a kayak rental place that I have used several times if you want to make your way out onto the lake, although they are not always open and can be tricky to find!
If you're not in the mood for exercise, then Slansko Lake's pebbly shore is a delightful place to lay down a towel and relax with a book, especially in the warmer summer months.

Pekara
Jump back in the car and make your way to Pekara, one of my favourite restaurants in town!
Pekara (meaning 'bakery' in the local tongue!) is a great little restaurant with a decent selection of bistro favorites - burgers, pizzas, wraps etc. - and a really good selection of baked goods and desserts!
It has a lively atmosphere (although in the winter can often be quite empty!) and is a very welcoming spot to enjoy some lunch.
I highly recommend the burgers and pulled pork!

Bedem Fortress
After lunch, it's time to take a walk-up to Bedem Fortress!
Bedem Fortress sits slightly west of the town on a rocky outcrop that was once the site of the original old town, where a settlement had stood since the Roman times. Part of the fortress dates back as far back as the 6th-century, although most of what can be seen today was constructed much later on by the Ottomans, following their successful conquest of the area.
The fort has seen a lot over the years and has been the site of many battles in the region's tumultuous history.
Today, it's a great place to experience some of the local history and stretch the legs with a walk-up from town!

Brankov Do Cottage
Brankov Do is one of mine and my wife's absolute favourite places in Montenegro!
This charming little cottage is a really wonderful place to stay. It's cozy and comfortable and feels really authentic to the region. The owner is the nicest man imaginable. He greeted us with cheese and homemade wine and made sure we had plenty of wood to keep the stove burning!
The area is beautiful, and you'll be sharing the grounds with lots of local cats who come around to be fed every now and again!
