Castle of Lorca
The Castle of Lorca is the city's most impressive sight, sitting above the city like a quiet guardian.
Built between the 9th and 15th centuries, it was a strategic stronghold for both the Moors and the Christians as they fought for control of Murcia. It eventually fell to the Christian Kingdom of Murcia, who used it as the first line of defence against raids from the neighbouring Kingdom of Granda.
The castle complex is expansive, with two towers on either side, ramparts to explore, and lush green gardens. There are also wonderful views over Lorca and the surrounding landscapes, of course.
Tickets are purchased at the entrance.
After your visit to the castle, make your way back to the car to drive back downhill into Lorca.

Parroquia de San Mateo

Sojo Bar
Another great thing about the Spanish siesta is how it frees up time to enjoy some downtime. Nearby, Sojo Bar is a good spot for a quiet drink in the afternoon sun (or shade, depending on how hot it is!).

Collegiate Church of San Patricio
Another great highlight in Lorca is the impressive church Antigua Colegiata de San Patricio, located in the central square. This is the only church in Spain dedicated to Saint Patrick, thanks to a battle between the Moors and Christians that ended with the Christians winning on what happened to be St. Patrick's Day.
The baroque facade is impressive, but equally fascinating are the interiors. The church was damaged in the 2011 earthquake that shook Lorca, but there was a silver lining. The damage revealed a previously undiscovered crypt, brimming with gorgeous Renaissance-era artworks.
