    The Ancient City of Lorca

Lorca might just be one of Spain's greatest, underrated gems. The history of the city will be explored by visiting its famous monuments, churches, and castles, as well as a stop at the popular archaeological museum. Along the way, you'll also stop at some incredible lookouts, getting a better overall feel for this dusty corner of Spain often overlooked by tourists.
    10:0030 min

    Mirador de La Muela

Swing up behind the town Alhama de Murcia, where the Mirador de La Muela offers astounding views. From here, you can look over the town below, with the flat plains stretching away to the Mediterranean. On the other side are the imposing peaks of the Regional Park Sierra Espuña.
After taking in the views, complete the drive to Lorca, just under an hour away.

    Castle of Lorca

The Castle of Lorca is the city's most impressive sight, sitting above the city like a quiet guardian.
Built between the 9th and 15th centuries, it was a strategic stronghold for both the Moors and the Christians as they fought for control of Murcia. It eventually fell to the Christian Kingdom of Murcia, who used it as the first line of defence against raids from the neighbouring Kingdom of Granda.
The castle complex is expansive, with two towers on either side, ramparts to explore, and lush green gardens. There are also wonderful views over Lorca and the surrounding landscapes, of course.
Tickets are purchased at the entrance.
After your visit to the castle, make your way back to the car to drive back downhill into Lorca.

    Car Park

This is a classic Spanish city, with a compact city centre that's more suited to walking. This central parking area is a great choice for leaving your car and continuing on foot. While in Lorca, you'll see its major churches, delve into ancient history in an archaeological museum, and have some well-prepared lunch.

    Parroquia de San Mateo

In classic Spanish fashion, the sights of Lorca are closed after lunch and don't reopen until 5 pm. Meanwhile, though, the medieval old town is a lovely place to wander through. First, make your way to this small Parish dedicated to San Mateo, enjoying the walk and the medieval vibes of Lorca.

    Sojo Bar

Another great thing about the Spanish siesta is how it frees up time to enjoy some downtime. Nearby, Sojo Bar is a good spot for a quiet drink in the afternoon sun (or shade, depending on how hot it is!).

    Collegiate Church of San Patricio

Another great highlight in Lorca is the impressive church Antigua Colegiata de San Patricio, located in the central square. This is the only church in Spain dedicated to Saint Patrick, thanks to a battle between the Moors and Christians that ended with the Christians winning on what happened to be St. Patrick's Day.
The baroque facade is impressive, but equally fascinating are the interiors. The church was damaged in the 2011 earthquake that shook Lorca, but there was a silver lining. The damage revealed a previously undiscovered crypt, brimming with gorgeous Renaissance-era artworks.

    Archaeological Museum of Lorca

The Archaeological Museum of Lorca is another of the city's highlights. The museum offers a journey through Lorca’s archaeology throughout its history, from the Palaeolithic era all the way to the construction of Lorca Castle. The displays span the Roma, Iberian, and Moorish cultures.

    Lookout of Librilla

Along the way, make a stop at this fantastic viewpoint overlooking the teal-blue dam surrounded by jagged mountains. It's one of the unique views in Murcia, and a great spot to watch the sun sink below the distant mountains.

    El Rincón de Olga

Nearby in the town of Librilla, El Rincon de Olga is a fantastic restaurant to enjoy a late (or Spanish time) dinner. Popular with the locals, the menu spans hamburgers, tapas dishes, and large baguettes – simple but delicious.
