Hay-on-Wye to Crickhowell

Day two of your Wye Valley road trip will begin with breakfast at The Old Electric Shop in Hay-on-Wye. Described as 'Hay's hippiest cafe' and 'fabulous and quirky', the community atmosphere and tasty food here makes it well worth a visit. Look forward to a menu packed full with delicious veggie food such as eggs florentine, green shakshuka and chilli cheese on toast. Once you've finished your breakfast, why not potter around The Old Electric Shop studios selling new and vintage clothing, furniture and, of course, books?

Warmly referred to as 'the town of books', Hay-on-Wye is world renowned for its vast array of secondhand and antiquarian bookshops. Take your time this morning exploring the unique, independent shops in the area, starting with The Addyman Annexe. There's also Richard Booth's Bookshop, Hay Cinema Bookshop, The Poetry Bookshop, Broad Street Book Centre and Clock Tower Books which all come highly recommended.

A visit to Hay would be incomplete without calling at Hay Antique Market. Here, you'll find cabinets brimming over with hundreds of vintage and antique goods. Situated in a medieval building in the heart of the town, this remarkable 18-room market has every kind of curious and fascinating item you could imagine. You're guaranteed to find a few treasures here!

Next stop - lunch! Wander over to the lovely Cosy Cafe for a yummy, wholesome meal followed by a sweet treat. Get comfy on the sofa, snuggle up in the booths, or watch the world go by from the high stools at the counter. Savoury food is served daily from 12pm until 3pm or 4pm, and it's always made fresh to order, too. The Cosy Cafe is best known for its legendary crepes. Savoury crepes are available over lunchtime and sweet crepes are also served all day. They're super tasty and there’s a flavour to suit every palate!

After lunch, take a look around the striking Hay Castle. In its 900-year history, it only opened to the public for the very first time in March 2022 after a major renovation project, so it's a sight you won't want to miss while you're in the area! The castle was originally built in the late 12th century by Lord William de Braose, and was then rebuilt the following century by Henry III. History lovers will enjoy learning about the landmark's rich and fascinating past, and visitors can also grab a cup of coffee and a few light refreshments from the on-site Hay Castle Cafe. Complete the afternoon with a quiet and peaceful walk through the Warren – a gorgeous riverside meadow and a designated area of Special Scientific Interest (SSI). Located around 5-minutes away from the centre of Hay-on-Wye, the Warren makes a beautiful place to walk, sit, swim or paddle. You can take your car 1/3 of the way to a very small parking area, which is approximately a 10-minute walk from main road. Stretch your legs here and enjoy the leafy green scenery before beginning the journey back to Cardiff.
