My surroundings

This is my home! In the morning, come here to enjoy walking in the freshest air. This hamlet is located on several walking and cycling routes through the Dutch agricultural landscape, with cows and sheep, dikes, canals and ponds, protected bird meadows, overflow land behind the dikes and lovely old villages. A nice walk is the Dik Trompath, that is specially meant for children, named after the children's books by writer C. Joh. Kieviet.

When you finish walking, come here for a cup of coffee and tasty breakfast before going further. I recommend trying the carrot cake and the apple pie.

Upon arrival to Volendam, pay a visit to my good old friend.
There's also a parking nearby if you wish to leave your vehicle and go for a walk in the city.

Enjoy the lifelike and authentic displays depicting daily life in old Volendam, including original film footage and paintings by the many artists who visited Volendam. As icing on the cake, there’s also the Cigar Bands House: an astonishing piece of home craft of a retired monk from Volendam who decorated his entire house with 11 million cigar bands that make up colourful mosaics.

I don't need food, only the wind. Humans are different. So, when you get hungry, go have your lunch at the waterfront restaurant with great seafood. Fishmix is highly recommended.

After lunch, take a boat ride to the Marken island. It used to be flooded regularly so residents built their homes on earth mounds. These little houses can't be found anywhere else in the world. As Marken is a small island, you can travel around it on foot.

Here you can visit the traditional clog manufacture, try some of them on or buy as souvenirs. Clogs are a type of footwear made in part or completely from wood. They are most often associated with The Netherlands in popular culture, although they have been traditionally worn in many countries.

For dinner, get back to Volendam via the last boat departing from Marken at 19:15. Enjoy new varieties of seafood in the atmosphere of this street food style venue and celebrate the conclusion of this interesting day of your short but amazing journey in North Holland.

After dinner, take your car and drive to the spot for the overnight stay. Have some rest (you humans need it, I don't know why...) and be prepared for tomorrow's adventure further into the north.
