The Historic City of Porto

The building, which represents the greatest heritage of the city and the country, is located in the historic center of the city, not far from Plaza Batalha.
It was formerly the site of a small 13th-century chapel.
It took about 11,000 tiles of azulejo to cover the walls of the Church of St. Ildefonso in the Baroque style, drawing the attention of connoisseurs of this zest.

The next point of the scenario is the richest part of the architectural and religious heritage of Porto and the whole country - the Church of Saint Clara. It ranks second after the Church of St. Francis for the richness of its interior decoration.
The building dates back to the fifteenth century, at that time it was planned to be a Franciscan convent. As with many religious buildings of that time, the facade of the church is quite simple. Two centuries later, it was supplemented with a Baroque door, which made it more attractive to the eyes of connoisseurs of architecture.
The interior of the building is filled with ornaments and the finest refined details in the Baroque and Rococo styles.
The church is open daily from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00.

Porto Cathedral is one of the oldest and most important local Romanesque monuments.
Its construction took place from the twelfth to the thirteenth century, which led to a large number of stylistically diverse details.
The early Romanesque construction, when the city was the center of the Svevian Episcopate in the 5th century, has undergone numerous modifications, but the overall appearance of the facade is still dominated by Romanesque features.

Walk along the ancient fortress wall of Fernandina.
Unfortunately, in the second half of the 18th century, when the walls ceased to perform their protective function and were no longer needed, some part of the wall was demolished to make more room for buildings and to expand the streets.
Some other part of the wall was demolished at the end of the nineteenth century, so today it has changed beyond recognition, but it is really worth wandering around in the vicinity of its remaining elements to get in touch with history.
