The first destination, less than 3 km from Santillana del Mar, is the Museum and Cave of Altamira to discover the marvel of the cave art with bizonts painted in red and black on the ceiling of the cave. These paintings date from 35,000 B.C. to 13,000 B.C. and are remarkable for the number of designs and their colours.
These caves were discovered in 1879 by the naturist Marcelino Saenz de Sautuola.
As with other caves in northern Spain, the original Altamira cave is closed to the public but an exact replica (call Neocueva) can be visited at the Altamira Museum. There is also a display of objects found at the site.
The general admission fee is 3 euros (museum and Neocueva). On Saturdays from 14:00 and all day Sunday admission is free.
The ticket can be bought on the spot, but it is always better to have it in advance. You can see the purchase options and more information on this website.
Open Hours: May to October Tuesday - Saturday 9:30 - 20:00. Sundays and holidays 9:30 - 15:00. November to April Tuesday - Saturday 9:30 - 18:00. Sundays and holidays 9:30 - 15:00.
