    Reddish-Coloured Villages With Cobbled Streets

    On the first day, the beauty of the villages of Castellón is visible at first sight. Walking through narrow streets invites you to stop and observe the low houses with stone facades, and the monuments and reddish-colored churches.

    Roca Grossa

    This natural monument is a symbol of Villafames. It is a large reddish rock that weighs more than 2000 tons and was formed more than 30 million years ago. It has a slight inclination that makes it look as if it could slide down at any moment. A photo here is a great souvenir of your time in the village.

    Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Villafamés

    A museum of great interest for those interested in contemporary art. Paintings and sculptures exhibited in a former palace. Guided tours are available for a fee, except from Tuesday to Sunday at 12:00, when admission to the museum includes the general guided tour.

    Santa Maria de Vilafamés

    Continuing the climb up to the castle, this church attracts with its reddish façade and the bell tower at the top.
    Originally from the 16th century and in Renaissance style, its interior is impressive: Valencian ceramic tiles, gilded altarpiece and frescoes. Next to the church there is a viewpoint to see the hills and the lower part of the village.

    Castell de Vilafamés

    Also, reddish in appearance thanks to the coloration of the stones of the walls and enclosures of the castle of Arab origin, it is one of the best places to see in Villafames. Located in the highest part of the village, only one of the defensive towers remains standing, the rest are ruins.
    To access the castle, you have to climb steps, which are not suitable for people with reduced mobility or baby carriages. Admission is free.

    Its construction began in the 13th century, when James I reigned in these lands. With the subsequent construction of the Church of the Assumption, this parish lost importance. It is not possible to visit its interior as it is currently closed to the public, but on the outside it has a great charm surrounded by stone houses.

    Mirador de Vilafamés

    The last stop in Villafames is its viewpoint. To get there you have to go up a small slope along the street Cami Serra until it appears that the village ends (it takes about 10 minutes maximum). From here, the views of the terraced buildings on the mountain with the old houses at the bottom and the church and the castle at the top, are a real postcard.

    Centre històric de Culla

    Culla is one of the villages that formed part of the so-called Templars during the 13th and 14th centuries. Stone walled houses and narrow cobbled streets give the charm to this small place.
    The historical centre can be covered in two hours following the route traced by the local tourist office through the Pla and Castell streets and stopping at the viewpoints to the mountain, the old prison and the church.

    Culla Castle (ruins)

    The walking route through the historic centre culminates at the highest point with the castle. Of Arab origin, only ruins remain today.
    The best thing about reaching the top are the views of the natural environment surrounding Culla and the lower part of the village with the roofs of the houses that tinge the landscape with red.
    Both the walk through the historic centre and the entrance to the castle are free of charge.

    Before dinner, this small café is ideal for a stop. It is located at the top and next to the edge of the cliff.
