Beautiful Unknown Villages and a Castle Full of Surprises

Chanaz … have you heard of it? Well, as of today, it will be etched in your memory as one of the most beautiful “Venice” style villas you have ever seen. There, you will see a 19th century water mill in full operation, go to a bar in the middle of the woods and cross very high bridges, surrounded by beautiful landscapes.
Then you´ll go to Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne. Another little Venice hidden and not much mentioned, it used to be a fortified village and there is still a gate from the 1300's that was part of the wall. Here you´ll stroll and fall in love with its atmosphere and its friendly inhabitants.
To finish the day, you´ll visit an incredible castle, not only for its beauty but for everything that is exhibited there. The most extraordinary collections you can imagine await you there: from fighter planes, racing cars and motorcycles to aerospace ships. All this accompanied by excellent wine. Can you imagine?

The best thing to do to enjoy the beautiful views is to stroll and walk along the walkways next to the canal waters. Here the river paints the landscape and embellishes it in an extraordinary way. Then walking arround the village, you´ll find narrow streets adorned with flowers, steep bridges and small boats plying the waters, it´s like a picture.
The ideal thing to do is to take a boat ride. These boats travel along the Savières canal to the Lac du Bourget (round trip), but these trips take about 2 hours and they leave mid-morning. If you decide to take it, remember that the schedules of the other points of interest on the trip may be affected.

In this old mill, things are made as they were centuries ago. The stone wheel moves continuously, driven by wooden gears that are set in motion by the force of the water.
Built in 1868, this mill is perfectly preserved and working in full operation to produce oils, jams and other products made from hazelnuts and walnuts. During the visit, the owners demonstrate the process and offer a small tasting.
