Times Square
Originally known as Long Acre, named after the district in London, Times Square housed William K. Vanderbilt's American Horse Exchange. In the late 1880s, Long Acre Square was a large open space surrounded by faded neighborhoods.
However, the area soon started changing. Illuminated theatrical advertising and street lighting have turned public space into a safer, more vibrant and attractive place. Adolph S. Ochs, owning The New York Times from 1896 to 1935, chose a very prominent site for the Times Tower, which was the second tallest building in the city at that time. That's where Times Square got its name from.
