Empire State Building
The Empire State Building design is said to be the result of a competition between Walter Chrysler of the Chrysler Corporation and John Jakob Raskob of General Motors, to find out who could build the taller skyscraper. Chrysler had already begun work on the famous Chrysler Building, the brilliant 1,046-foot building in downtown Manhattan.
Not to be surpassed, Raskob brought together a group of well-known investors, including the former Governor of New York Alfred E. Smith, as well as specialists in the field of construction and design, and began work on the project. There is a version that the creation of a skyscraper with a sharp spire of Raskob has inspired the appearance of a pencil.
