Picturesque Castles, Churches and Greek Ruins Await You

This is going to be an unforgettable day as you leave the busy city of Naples far behind and travel south to the gorgeous coastline of the Cilento.
Along the drive you'll visit a medieval castle under restoration, a modern church filled with intricate stained glass and the most impressive of all—Greek ruins from 600 B.C.
There will be lots of great food and some cheese tasting to go along with your day, so everything is covered!

    Il Castelluccio

One of the best preserved castles in the region is the 1,000-year-old medieval castle "Il Casteluccio".
Over the years it slipped into a crumbling manor until 2015 when a generous grant funded the renovation and restoration. It was predicted, with much fanfare, to open to the public in 2019-2020. Unfortunately the Covid pandemic halted the production and there is no updated opening date for this majestic fortress.
Nevertheless, you're free to visit the grounds and exterior, as many people do and marvel at the stunning panorama with the entire Gulf of Salerno below you.

    Casa Getsemani Paestum

Relatively 'modern' by Italian standards, this place of contemplation and holy worship was created in 1956. However, it is much more than just a church. The complex houses a meditation garden, sculptures, a cloister, and the crypt.
But the jewel of the Santuario del Getsemani is the dome with its six delicate, stained-glass windows 32 meters above you.
Feel free to explore the grounds as they are open for all to enjoy.

    Archaeological Park of Paestum

While most think of Roman ruins in Italy, the truth is that the Greeks got here long before and left their mark on this land.
Paestum, founded by the Greeks in 600 B.C. was a strong empire until the Romans conquered it in 273 B.C.
While you can see the mark the Roman conquest left on the ancient, seaside Greek city, the best preserved structures are of Greek origin. In particular "The Temple of Hara II" is nearly perfectly intact and a site to behold. Most visitors to Paestum spend an average of one hour in the excellent museum learning about the history of the site before walking through the archeological park for a couple of hours. Guides are available at the entrance should you wish to hire one for the park.
Tickets can be bought at the park entrance or online through the website.

    La Dispensa di San Salvatore

This area of the Cilento is famous for the buffalo farms where DOP world-class buffalo mozzarella is farmed and produced.
The dairy farm of Azienda Agricola San Salvatore is a working buffalo farm where the gentle giants graze nearby as they have for centuries on this verdant land.
La Dispensa is the company store where you can sample and purchase their many buffalo products ranging from DOP buffalo mozzarella, ricotta, yogurt and ice cream.
Have a snack at the shop or take some home with you (or both!). While the farm and dairy can only be visited through a private, guided tour, you're more than welcome to walk around and see if any buffalo are near the gates to take some photos.

    La Pignata

Ristorante La Pignata, located in Capaccio on the drive back to Naples, is a relaxed restaurant, with excellent hospitality from the staff and is a favorite place for locals to have dinner.
Their specialty, being so close to the sea is fresh fish. But if seafood isn't your thing, don't worry there are also plenty of pasta and veggie dishes to choose from.
Be sure to try one of their homemade desserts which change daily.
