Just a Little West of Tucson

This is your bonafide desert day in Tucson, Arizona. Start off with a big brunch and head south for an excellent example of Spanish Colonial Architecture. Grab a snack of Native fry bread, then head west of town toward an incredible outdoor museum, followed by Saguaro National Park West. There is another local favorite to view sunset, and then your day ends at one of the oldest restaurants in the country.

    Cup Cafe

Head downstairs after a restful night at Hotel Congress and enjoy a classic brunch at Cup Cafe. With a Bloody Mary/mimosa bar, inventive entrées, and brunch staples, there is a reason this is a local favorite. Opt to sit outside, as there is often live music on the patio.

    San Xavier del Bac Mission

Mission San Xavier del Bac is a popular attraction southwest of town on the Tohono O'odham Nation San Xavier Indian Reservation. Built in the late 1700s, the Spanish Catholic Colonial Mission serves as a reminder of the histories that have crossed this region. After you have viewed and visited the Mission, be sure to have a snack at one of the various Native fry bread vendors out front. With delicious sweet and savory options, these snacks are a must before a big afternoon in the desert.

    Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum

Another one of the absolutely-must-do activities in Tucson, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is an incredible stop. At once a wildlife sanctuary, living outdoor museum, and learning center, this museum is worth every penny of its admission fee. And while the museum is accessible, you will be getting your steps in: the grounds are simply enormous. Highlights include a hummingbird sanctuary and cactus garden.

    Red Hills Visitor Center

Saguaro West has endless groups of extremely old Saguaros. Start at the Red Hills Visitor Center, learn more about the park and take in the stunning views from the patio. It is best to chat with a ranger to choose a hike or activity that best suits your speed, but the Desert Discovery Nature Trail is an easy favorite with plenty of information on the cacti.

    Gates Pass Overlook

Another local favorite for sunset, Gates Pass is part of Tucson Mountain Park. Stop here for a gorgeous westerly view on your way back into town from the Desert Museum and Saguaro West. The vibrant colors turn orange to purple here, and the view is easily accessible from the parking lot.

    El Charro Café

Celebrating 100 years of business, El Charro is considered the oldest restaurant continuously operating under the same family in the country. With a rich history and wide impact, the restaurant means nearly as much to Tucson as Saguaros. Originated in 1922 by Monica Flin (affectionately called Tia Monica), it is still woman-led in 2022 by local chef and restaurateur Carlotta Flores. Do not miss the carne seca (dry beef), some of the best you will find in the US. El Charro does not take reservations for parties under 8, and you will often experience a wait.

    Graduate Tucson

Between the 14th floor Moonstone bar and the rooftop pool, it would be hard to say this stay is not all about the view, but the lovely modern accommodation at the Graduate will treat visitors to the total package. With convenient touches like pet friendly rooms and complimentary bike rentals, the Graduate is a top stay in this university town.
