Lancaster Castle
Visit somewhat different from what you might find in other fortresses. Although the castle had its time of kings and queens, its hallmark is based on prisoners and their executions.
Since the 12th century, a prison has been housed inside the castle and operated until 2011, just a few years ago! It was during the Middle Ages that the castle was used for death sentences and subsequent executions. Today, one of the rooms that can be visited exhibits objects that were used in the executions.
One of the most emblematic cases was during the reign of James I, whose belief in witchcraft led to the death penalty for the so-called Pendle witches.
The interior of the castle can only be entered with a guided tour. It is recommended, as the history of the place, legends and a walk through the old rooms and cells are told. Without a guided tour, you can only enter the courtyards of the castle.
Guided tours' timetable: Monday to Friday: 10:00, 10:45, 11:30, 12:15, 13:00, 13:45, 14:30, 15:15 and 16:00. Saturday and Sunday: 10.00, 10.30, 11.00, 11.30, 12.00, 13.30, 14.00, 14.30, 15.00, 15.30 and 16.00.
