    Princes Street Gardens

Once you've had enough of ancient times, head to the charming Princes Street Gardens which are an idyllic part of Edinburgh to explore all year round, but arguably more so during the summer months when this itinerary is intended to be used as they're a welcome haven amongst the hustle and bustle of the city.

    Scott Monument

Just a short walk from Princes Street Gardens, you'll find the Scott Monument; an imposing Gothic-looking structure that's dedicated to the Scottish author Sir Walter Scott.
You can even climb the 287 steps of the narrow staircase, but double-check that it's open before you travel as it's been closed for the last two years due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Even if you don't climb all the way to the top, it's still an impressive sight to see from the ground and it makes for an excellent photograph subject from almost every angle.
