The Zakheim Gate is part of the first rampart fortification of Kaliningrad, which was built in the early seventeenth century. They have a massive construction - heavy and sturdy guards of the city.

One of the surviving castles of the Teutonic Order in the Kaliningrad region is located in the village of Nizovye. The first found written mention of the construction of a medieval fortress in this area dates back to 1258. Initially the fortress was used as an inn near the road: people of the Order, including clergymen and warriors, stayed here as needed.

It was once the impregnable castle of the bishop of Sambia in the distant 14th century, but today only ruins remain of Zaalau Castle.

In the 14th century these territories were divided between the Teutonic Order and the bishopric after the conquest. The castle belonged to the bishopric of Zamland. Nowadays the castle is the property of the Russian Orthodox Church.
