    Marburg Altstadt

    You arrived at the small and vibrant Old Town at Marburg. Walk around and explore this historical place. In the centre you find the Markplatz and the Rathaus. The Rathaus (Town Hall) was built between 1512 and 1527. The late Gothic stone building consists of three stories. In the middle of the front side, you find a hexagonal stair tower with its own entrance. Situated above the tower is a beautifully decorated roof gable with a clock from 1581/1582. Another interesting part of the building is the copper rooster and the trumpeter. The rooster moves its wings and the trumpeter blows its instrument every hour. You can also discover the scales of Justice and the hourglass of death which also moves by the train connected to the clockwork. The market square with the historic Town Hall remains in the centre of Marburg.

    Landgrafen Palace

    Your next visiting point is a castle which is inspired from several fairy tales of the Grimm Brothers. The oldest part of the building dates back to the 9th – 13th century. It was built by the first Hessian landgrave, Heinrich I.
    Although only a few original interiors have survived, there are still some interesting parts which can be found. For example, the Prince`s Hall in the north wing which was designed in Gothic style, and it is the largest secular hall in Germany. Other example is the castle chapel which is consecrated in 1290 and its floor which is made of a combination of glazed clay tiles and parts of the original wall paintings.
    During its history the castle served as a prison than as the Hessian State Archive. Today it gives a home to the Museum of Cultural History. Take a tour in this historic place and enjoy the spectacular views.

    Botanical Garden
