Welcome to the first day of your journey. In this route you will heading to Bonn. Before you begin your discovery in this beautiful city, you visit two impressive buildings.
First you stop in Limburg where you explore its Romanesque style cathedral. Then you walk through the Schloss Drachenburg which is a gothic style private villa. Finally, you arrive one of the oldest cities in Germany. Bonn is situated on the Middle Rhine, and it was the capital of West Germany until 1990. Limburg Cathedral
This perfectly preserved late Romanesque style building is situated on a cliff above the Lahn River. Originally, a church stood here which built in the 8th century and dedicated to St. George. Then in 910, Count Conrad Kurzbold built a three aisled basilica on the remains. In 1235 it was consecrated by the archbishop of Trier.
During its history, the cathedral went through several renovations and extension. This had an effect on the interior design as every change added different styles to te building. Finally, between 1965 and 1990 the church restored to its original Romanesque style.
Architecturally this building is beautiful. The cross shaped ground plan, the half columns and massive pillars which carrying the vault. You can find Gothic elements on the galleries where you see pointed arch vault and “opened” walls with corridors and arcades. You can discover the Moorish influence in the elevated gallery.
As you are walking in, there are many beautiful designs are waiting for you. The Gothic tabernacle which sculpted from whinstone in 1496. The round window which shows St. George and the coats of arms of the worldly and ecclesiastical authorities around him from 1882. The organ which has 60 organ stops with 4306 organ pipes and made by Johannes Klais in 1978. Stained glass windows created by Hubert Spierling from Krefeld in 1993, Johannes Schreiter in 1977, and Georg Meistermann in the late 1980s. Finally, the medieval frescoes dating from 1220 to 1235.

Schloss Drachenburg
Your next stop is the Schloss Drachenburg. It is a Gothic styled private villa designed as a palace. It built from 1882 until 1884 on the Drachenfells hill by Baron Stephan von Sarter.
As you arrive to the palace, two large, golden stags welcome you. There are also two staircase which brings you through the Venus terrace to the building.
As you are standing inside enjoy the beautiful carved wooden panels, ornamented vaults as well as Baroque style frescoes and colorful stained glasses.
The palace also offers an incredible view of the Rhine, the densely forested Siebengebirge, and even the Cologne cathedral. Stop and enjoy the place where once poets such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Hölderlin used to gather inspiration for Rhine Romanticism. After the tour enjoy a bite to eat in the palace`s Bistro.

Beethoven-Haus Bonn

Minster of St. Martin's
Your next stop is one of the oldest churches in Bonn. It was built between the 11th and 13th century on the site of the graves of Cassius and Florentius who were martyrs and city patrons. The building became the center of the Electorate and Archbishopric of Cologne. The style of the church is a mixture of Romanesque and gothic elements. The inside decoration is reflecting the combination of Baroque period, the last century, and present days. Enjoy this special atmosphere.
