An Historic Border, a Working Abbey and a Hike Through Heath

Your first stop takes you back in time to a divided Germany. Here you can see a small section of the original inner-Germany border that divided two neighbouring villages and prevented citizens of East Germany from escaping to the West. Walk the path along the original fence, wall, and watch towers, and read information boards illuminating the historical context of the monument.
You can leave your car in the car park across the street.

Your next stop is the serene Weinhausen Abbey, a working convent for single women under 65 who have already raised families and had careers and now wish to spend their golden years in a monastic environment. You can enjoy a walk around the beautiful grounds and brick gothic buildings dating back to 1230, visit the museums containing artwork and tapestries, enjoy the half-timbered houses nearby, and pick up a bite to eat at the Kloster Cafe. Guided tours of the inside of the abbey are generally offered three times a day.

After arriving in Celle, park in the Parkhaus Nordwall car park and walk five minutes to cosy Le Feu for a delicious lunch from a choice of 50 different kinds of Flammkuchen, including vegetarian and vegan options. They also offer bowls, soups, and sweet treats, as well as a selection of beer, wine, coffee, and tea.

Now it’s time to take a walk through charming Celle. In the Altstadt area you’ll find cobblestoned streets lined with historic half-timbered houses, the Hoppener Haus built in 1532, the Altes Rathaus, a Glockenspiel, and the Celle castle and grounds. All of these sights are within a short walk of each other.

After a drive north through the countryside you’ll arrive at the Misselhorner Heide. This is the perfect place to enjoy a short nature hike. With its extensive heath fields, Misselhorner Heide is considered one of the most beautiful heath areas. Follow the signs and trail markers to explore this protected nature park. You can leave your car in the Misselhorner Heide car park.

After your hike and drive to Lüneburg you’re no doubt hungry. After checking into your hotel, head to 0,75 Wine bar & Eatery for a relaxing meal, drinks, and dessert. You can also browse the wine shop for a souvenir or two to take home.
