Stage Four: Ice Kingdom and Icebergs

It is still mind-blowing to be able to drive to the foot of all the extraordinary natural wonders in Iceland. Jökulsárlón was not going to be an exception. Free and ample parking.

To begin with, it is best to get an idea of the unique beauty in front of you. Climb this small mound from where you can see the glacial lagoon of Jökulsárlón (a term that means "lagoon of the glacial river") with huge icebergs.

You can take a short walk along the shore to take some pictures but this excursion will leave you frozen, never better said. These giant boulders, more than 1,000 years old, flow freely in the icy waters of Iceland's deepest lake. The deepest point is 248 meters. If you are attentive, you can see some detachment.
This zodiac tour allows you to see the different shades of the ice sheets up close and photograph some of the seals that live in these waters. Lake Jökulsárlón is the result of the retreat of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier since 1934. It grows perpetually while the glacier decreases. Located south of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe, this lagoon flows into the Atlantic Ocean through a short stretch of river. The color of the water is the result of the mixture of fresh and salt water.

The car park is large and adjoins the beach. In 5 minutes you will be at the foot of these ice diamonds that sparkle even brighter in the sun in contrast to the blackness of the sand on the beach. Playa Diamante is part of the large glacial plain of Breiðamerkursandur which stretches for approximately 18 kilometres.
I know of no other place in the world where you can photograph glacial ice floating on salt water and black volcanic sand.
The amount of ice blocks or icebergs you can find is not the same every day, it all depends on the ice break-offs occurring in the nearby Jökulsárlón lagoon. If the tide is low, the experience will be even better. Don't forget your camera or mobile phone.

Did you think the surprises were over? Well, no. On the way back to Reykjavík you will stop to see the Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon. Be prepared for one last hike and wear comfortable shoes, better if they have rubber soles.

The 1.5 km trail to this viewpoint is somewhat steep. It is about 40 minutes round trip. The views are sublime. Iceland never ceases to amaze, it is like a deck of cards in which no matter which one you draw, the next one is even more spectacular.
This greenish gorge 100 meters deep has been drawn by glacial meltwater for millions of years. The landscape is built little by little, always in constant evolution.

Before arriving in Reykjavik, one last treat for your stomach in... an old stable? An old barn? Why not! This family restaurant is a cozy corner at the foot of Eyjafjallajökull. If this volcano-glacier doesn't ring a bell, you will surely remember it for the chaos it caused in 2010 by closing the airspace of half of Europe.
