Adriatic Coast: High Cliffs And Emerald Sea

The first boat tour usually leaves at 10:00 a.m., so we have plenty of time to go to the Cape Santa Maria di Leuca Lighthouse and admire the view of the Gulf of Leuca.

There is nothing like the sea to stimulate the appetite, and for lunch today we will go to a masseria, a typical rural building in the southern Italian tradition.

Park along the road and follow the signs for the Cipolliane trail along the cliff from Marina di Novaglie to Ciolo.
The special feature of this place is of interest for the study of the Paleolithic and characterized by four shelters placed in the rock almost 30m above sea level.

After the southernmost point in Italy, we go to the easternmost point with Torre dell'Orte.
As with the Ionian coast, the Adriatic coast is also characterized by monitoring towers for protection from the Turks whose construction work began around 1565.
Compared to the previous ones, however, this one is architecturally profoundly different from the square shapes.
The whole area around the tower is very beautiful; take a few minutes to walk around and enjoy the view.

We stop for a snack in the town of Otranto, famous for its history dating back to Greek and Roman times, and you can still see relics of it today, as well as those from the Byzantine and Aragonese periods.
A must-see is definitely the original castle from the late 15th century and like that of Taranto, it has seen successive dominations repair, expand and rebuild it.
Take time for a tour of the historic center and choose a café for a break before getting back in the car.

The opening image of this itinerary is precisely the stacks of Torre Sant'Andrea. The sea on this beach has received the "blue flag" award for several years, meaning a pristine place.
Here, too, more or less hidden caves characterize a landscape shaped in the white rock. The arched stacks, the most famous is called "of the lovers."

Trulli are a typical building in Apulia, and the most famous town to admire them is certainly Alberobello. Nevertheless, it is not uncommon to come across these buildings, especially in the countryside.
On the way back to Bari, we make a stop at the Trulli delle Fate in Melendugno.

Breaking the return trip for dinner, we stop just outside Lecce at Luperto Claudio's Nuova Fattoria, famous for its spit-roasted chicken!
