From Viking Mounds to Scenic Fjord Drives

The Gokstad Burial Mound is one of the most important ones in Norway. It was excavated in 1880 and they found the remains of a well-preserved Viking Ship with an unknown man buried inside it. However, to get such a large burial, it must have been someone of importance.
The original ship and finds are exhibited in the Viking Ship Musem in Bygdøy in Oslo.

Istrehågan is one of the most underrated sites along the Viking Trail. It is free to visit in the open air and definitely deserves a visit. Often referred to as the Stonehenge of Norway, you can tell why!
You can see two stone ships made out of large stone blocks making out what was used as a burial site. Among the remains that were found in the burial mound, some artifacts date back as long as the year 400.
It is a great place to walk around too with many lovely trails in the nearby area.

Kaupang is the oldest city in Norway dating back to the year 800 and was a buzzing Viking city until the year 1000.
If you visit in the summer months, July to August, the site is open for fun activities for children and adults alike, make your own bread and enjoy a lovely communal meal.

Go for a stroll on the beach while you wait for the car to charge. Lillevikstranda is a nice little beach a short walk from the charging stations where you can breathe in the sea breeze.

Pick up the car and drive to the last site on the Viking Trail.

The burial mounds at Mølen are the last place to visit on the Viking Trail. A total of 230 burial rock mounds were found here, dating back to the Iron and early Viking age. The largest ones are 35 meters long!
It is believed that the site was used as a burial place for the Ynglinge family that ruled as minor kings early in the Viking age - however, there is no certainty.
The site is set by the beach and is impressive to witness! No wonder why UNESCO declared it a European Geopark.
This is also a free outdoor space site to see.

Drive the scenic road along the fjord to Berger, a beautiful local area for swimming in the summer and coastal walks throughout the rest of the year. Go for a romantic walk along the rocky coastline in one of the most picturesque places along the fjord. This is good for a longer or shorter walk, so if you want to extend it, feel free to do so.

Get ready to embark on the shortest ferry route in Norway from Svelvik to Verket across the picturesque Svelvikstrømmen. It only takes 5 minutes to cross, but it is such a beautiful little crossing.
The ferry runs every day between 09:00 and 22:30 at 30 minutes to 1-hour intervals. You can check the timetable here.

Round off your road trip with an exquisite dinner at Ankeret Restaurant overlooking the Drammens Fjord on your way back to Oslo. In fact, this restaurant offers the best views of the fjord, especially at sunset!
The pizzas at Ankeret are incredibly good and should not be missed!
