    Ain’t the Grand Canyon Grand?

    Day 1 of your Flagstaff, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada road trip is jam packed, full of fun activities and stunning scenery. Surrounded by mountains, ponderosa pines and the desert, Flagstaff is a convenient base to exploring nearby public lands including the gorgeous San Francisco Peaks and unforgettable Grand Canyon National Park.
    Located at 7,000 feet, Flagstaff has comfortable, temperate weather most of the year but is cold and possibly snowy in the winter season. Depending on the month, you'll want to pack layers and appropriate outerwear since this route includes both mountain and desert environment.
    The route today is a mix interstate driving and secondary roads with a few opportunities to charge the vehicle during the day and at the overnight stop in Kingman.
    Comfortable footwear and sunglasses are a must for the activities. Don't forget to double check your camera battery for the loads of photos you'll be snapping.

    The movie is available in eight languages.
    There's a car park at the visitor center and you can leave the vehicle to visit some of the viewpoints in the vicinity or catch the free shuttle to other popular spots.

    After the visitor center, make the short walk over to one of the most impressive views in the park. Mather Point, named after Stephen Tyng Mather, the first director of the National Park Service, is a great introduction to this wonder of the world.

    Grand Canyon Village

    Welcome to Grand Canyon Village, your base of operations for the rest of today's activities. From this location you can walk to some of the sights or take the free complimentary shuttle that travels along the rim of the canyon, stopping at the most popular viewpoints.
    There are several car parks in the village depending on what's available so the walking distances on the instructions could vary. However, feel free to move the car around to other areas for convenience.

    Grand Canyon Village is where you can find some of the most historic places in the area including the well known Bright Angel Lodge. Just in time for lunch, stop by the hotel for a peak and treat yourself to a meal at the timeless Arizona Steakhouse in the lodge.
    The restaurant is open for lunch every day 11:30am to 3pm and serves soups, salads, tamales, burgers and of course, steaks. They also offer wine, beer and their famous Grand Canyon Mule cocktails - named after the mules that have been a big part in the canyon's history.
    If a sit-down meal isn't what you are looking for, then there are several other diner type restaurants and food trucks in the village.

    Lookout Studio

    Lookout Studio

    For inspiring views of the canyon, visit Mary Colter's Lookout Studio. The studio was built in the early 1900's as a structure for visitors to safely photograph and view the Grand Canyon.
    The studio was constructed on the very edge of the canyon rim and appears as if it grows out of it. Notice how it blends in with the elements. The views from here are absolutely stunning.
    The studio is now a gift shop open every day from 9am-5pm.
