Walteria Lake
Other Great Outdoors
Open Details
To your right, you'll see an area that was once known as Walteria Lake due to its propensity to flood after heavy rains. Long-time residents of the area can recall sections of Hawthorne Boulevard near Pacific Coast Highway being submerged for extended periods. Some even remember the "lake" expanding northwestward to encompass areas around Calle Mayor and Lomita Boulevard. In 1960s, the authorities decided to build a retention basin to put an end to the floods that were once part of the South Bay's history. This retention basin is still in place, it is beyond the buildings to your right, and is now referred to as Walteria Lake.

Lomita
Other Great Outdoors
Open Details
You'll soon drive into Lomita, California. Before European settlement, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes. With the arrival of Spanish explorers, the area became part of the vast Spanish land. It was later controlled by Mexico when it gained independence from Spain. After the United States acquired California following the Mexican-American War, the land changed hands and was eventually used for agriculture and ranching. Lomita's history as a city begins in the early 20th century. In 1907, the area was known as "Lomita Park," a name derived from the Spanish word for "little knoll" or "small hill." It was officially incorporated as the city of Lomita in 1964.
