On this visit, you will spend time along the South Rim Road at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. It's called Black Canyon because some spots within the canyon are so narrow that they only get about 30 minutes of sunlight. This scenic route will take you along 7 miles toward its last lookout point called High point. Along the way, you’ll find several lookout points where you can stop for pictures. Some will be short and next to the parking area, while others might require a short walk.
The visitor center is packed with helpful information about this national park and rangers who are happy to answer any questions. You'll also find bathrooms and stations to refill your water bottles. Parking is available and short hikes are close by the center if you want to explore a bit.
It’s best to avoid this area in the winter months, since freezing temperatures and heavy snow can make it difficult for cars to explore the scenic route. The roads are usually open with no closures during April and November, but always check online to ensure you can visit. You can also purchase your pass online, but make sure you print it before because they won't be able to scan your code once you arrive.
