On this final day of driving, pick your way back down the coast, making sure to leave enough time for treats and souvenirs in the beach towns of southern Maine.

Androscoggin Swinging Bridge
Suspended over the Androscoggin River, this famous swinging pedestrian bridge was first built in 1892 for workers traveling between Topsham and the Cabot Mill in Brunswick. Soon, this feat of civil engineering will become a part of the longer Androscoggin Riverwalk, but for now, it’s an extremely Instagrammable place to stretch your legs before a long day of driving.

L.L.Bean
Shopping isn’t for everyone, but even the most frugal souls will enjoy poking around the flagship location of Maine’s favorite outdoor outfitters. L.L. Bean in Freeport is open 24 hours, and while you’ll find signature goods like slippers and canvas bags, you’ll also encounter some novelties. A pair of taxidermied moose locked in battle? Got it. A riverbed aquarium? Sure. A giant winter boot? That’s how you’ll know you’re in the right place.

Maine Beer Company
Lunch at Maine Beer Company, Freeport’s favorite spot for Maine-inspired IPAs and delightful seasonal pizzas. They even have a beer called “Lunch” for the occasion. Relax in the spacious tasting room, enjoy live music (especially on weekends), and watch the inner workings of the brewery before you set out on the road again.
The tasting room is open daily 11:00 - 20:00. Reservations are not required, but are recommended. Learn more via this link.

Scoop Deck
What’s your favorite ice cream flavor? If you can dream it, it’s on the legendary flavor board at The Scoop Deck in Wells. Kids usually gravitate toward the blue Dinosaur Crunch, but even the most sophisticated palates will find something to adore in the homemade waffle cones. Lines are long in summer, but it’s part of the experience. Make a new friend while you wait. Ask them what their favorite ice cream flavor is.

Marginal Way
Perkins Cove, or simply “The Cove,” is a historic fishing and arts community that has embraced the summer tourist scene with a collection of walkable shops and restaurants. We recommend arriving on The Marginal Way, a ~1 mile paved oceanside path from Ogunquit. The drawbridge and the basin dock make great photo opportunities, but there’s also a great candy store for the sweet tooth in your car.

When Pigs Fly Restaurant & Pizzeria
Pizza again? Trust us, the wood-fired pies at Kittery’s When Pigs Fly Restaurant and Pizzeria are worth a stop before you cross the border into New Hampshire. Don’t worry, they also have great pastas, salads, and sandwiches. The signature ingredient here is the house-made When Pigs Fly dough. Definitely take a loaf or two home from the adjacent company store!
