- Explore the magnificent caves of Grotte d'Oselle.
- Learn about Victor Hugo at the house he was born in.
- Visit the 300-year-old Besançon citadel.
Just over an hour outside of Dijon are two incredible places that are somewhat under the radar. The first is la Grotte d'Oselle, which is one of the oldest tourist caves. While it was discovered in the 13th century, organised visits to the caves have been running since the 15th century. It was even used as a refuge during the French Revolution.
The second is the city of Besançon where their 300-year-old fortress is preserved as a UNESCO world heritage site. Its other claim to fame is that renowned writer Victor Hugo was born there and his house has been turned into a museum where you can learn about his life and his passion for social justice.
