Historical Town, Cheese, and Heritage Walk

Mulhouse is a creative city, flourishing with street art at every street corner. You are about to explore it walking around the city. Art is everywhere, pay attention, on a mailbox, a road sign. Open your eyes and let yourself be surprised by impressive frescoes and other contemporary installations.
The first fresco you will see is "le M.U.R" meaning the W.A.L.L. Every month, there is a different artist who is painting the wall. The initiative comes from a local association aiming at promoting street art. Next to the "wall", find the red painting with the message "toutakou you look at me" in the center. The painting is the work of Pierre Frænkel, an artist known in Mulhouse for his messages and paintings in public spaces.

The Place de la Réunion is known as the place where (almost) everything happens. Place de la Réunion means meeting square.
The residents meet here to have a drink on the terrace in summer and at the Christmas market in winter.
The square is also surrounding by a remarkable architecture. You will see Renaissance residences such as the Maison Mieg, a bourgeois residence with painted walls built in 1418 and the old Town Hall with its richly ornamented pink facade.

Live the local experience! Take a sit at the terrace of this place and have a coffee with a delicious pastry. This establishment is well-known in Alsace and has many more cafés throughout the region.

The visit of Mulhouse is now finished. Next stop is the Munster Valley, located in the heart of the Vosges mountains in the Ballons Natural Park, it is a great place rich of heritage and stunning nature.
Get in the car and head to Munster, the city where the well-know Alsatian cheese is produced.

Munster is well-known for its delicious cheese. Before visiting the Cheese House and discovering all of its secret, let's have a quick snack at the restaurant of the museum.
In a green setting in the heart of the Munster Valley, the restaurant offers beautiful dishes made out of local products. Enjoy the tasty break before heading to the visit.

It is now time to discover all about it during a visit of the Cheese House. The visit will teach you more about the Munster valley, the key art and traditional objects involved in the making of the cheese and all the manufacturing secrets. The visit ends with a tasting of the famous Munster! The cheese will have no more secret to you.

You are now going to hike the "sentier de l'écureuil". The walk is 6.4 km return and will take you from the Three Castles to Hohlandsbourg Castle in the forest of the Castles. Enjoy the relaxing walk in nature and the stunning views on the plain of Alsace and the valley of Munster.

The first stop is the Three Castles of Eguisheim. Built in the 11th century by the Counts of Eguisheim, the ruins still give a feel of sentries watching over Eguisheim and Husseren.
Keep following the squirrel's paw. On the way up to the Hohlandsburg Castle, you will see other ruins of castles and experience the incredible nature of the forest. The fauna and flora is breathtaking.

This point of water is called madam's fountain. Water sources used to be sacred, known to heal certain illnesses. Therefore, people used to think they were home of feminine divinities.
Take a quick break and enjoy the sacred peacefulness of the spot.

Hohlandsbourg Castle used to be a strategic point of defense within the plain of Alsace. Nowadays, the ruins are open to tourism. Unfortunately, there is no time to visit the inside today but check out the magnificent fortified wall that imposes on the plain. From its walkway, the panoramas towards the Plain of Alsace, the Vosges foothills and the Valley of Munster are absolutely incredible.
After this stop, you will head back towards the three Castles of Eguisheim. Follow the squirrel's paw to get back to the parking lot where it all started.

It is time to get back in the car and leave the magical place towards the next stop of the route. You will head towards Eguishem, one of the most charming villages on the Alsatian wine route. The village has pretty cobbled streets with traditional half-timbered houses painted in beautiful colours.

Tonight, you will spend the night at the typical Alsatian Inn hotel.
Park your car at the parking lot and process with check in before heading to town for a delicious dinner.
