The first stop proposed in this itinerary is Bakio, a small town on the Biscayan coast. There, you can take a walk along the coastal promenade and appreciate the strength of the sea and the presence of some of the cliffs.
Note: If you travel on a Monday or Tuesday, you can buy some food to make sandwiches and eat after the next stop because the restaurant there is closed on those days. If you prefer, you can go to a bar for a coffee and a snack. For example, Bar Itxas Ondo (in front of a viewpoint).

The second stop is to visit one of the most beautiful and incredible places on the coast of Biscay: San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. But first, you can take a look at this viewpoint that is located by the restaurant.
The place where the path to the sanctuary begins is known as "Eneperi" because that is the name of the restaurant that is located right in that place.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is an island connected to the mainland by a bridge and many steps. On the island, there is a hermitage dedicated to San Juan.
To get to the hermitage, you have to walk for a little more than half an hour. The path can be dirty and includes a long flight of stairs. From the first moment of walking, you will fall in love with the landscapes and the colours of nature.
Since it was chosen as one of the scenes of the series Game of Thrones, the number of visits has increased significantly. That is why the number of people who can visit it is limited per day. It is necessary to get a ticket to have a place. It is free, but you must request it in advance.
Please note that access to the stairs leading to the hermitage may be closed, so always check it beforehand.

After enjoying the beautiful landscapes of the hermitage and the islet, it is time for a good lunch. You can choose to eat in the restaurant where the viewpoint is located to recover from the hike.
After lunch, the route continues with mountains on one side and the sea on the other. The next stop is the Matxitxako lighthouse.

You can park there and walk the small path to the Matxitxako lighthouse. You will actually see two lighthouses: the old one, built in 1852, and the new one, which came into operation in 1909.
You can take some pictures and breathe in the fresh air.
Ready to continue? The next stop is Bermeo, with its port, old town and viewpoints.

One of the best viewpoints is the one in the Baztarre square. From there you can see the port and the immensity of the sea.
Leave the car in a street near the viewpoint for a walk along the coast.

The proposal is to walk quietly from the previous viewpoint to the area of the tourist office of Bermeo and the Lamera Park.
You can make a detour to go up to the fishermen's monument. Right there you will find the Fishermen's Museum. This museum is located in the Ercilla Tower, which has been declared a National Monument.
In the museum you can learn about the customs of the local fishermen, the organization of the guilds, the techniques they used, the species they fished the most, the boats they used and the history of Bermeo and the Ercilla Tower.
If you prefer not to visit the museum, or it is closed on the day of your trip, you can take a stroll through the streets of the old town that start there.

On the way to the Lamera Park and tourist office, you will see a beautiful marina (old port), buildings with colorful facades and several cafés, ice-cream shops and restaurants.
After the stroll, you can pick up the car you left by the Baztarre square to drive to the last destination of the day.

Mundaka is one of the many villages that dot the beautiful green and mountainous landscape of the País Vasco.
You can leave the car in a street near the train station and walk down to the marina area.

On your way from the town hall to the port, you can spend several minutes walking through the narrow streets of Mundaka and pay attention to the details of the houses related to fishing and the harbour.

It's time for some delicious pintxos and a good beer!
Choose a place with a view of the marina and enjoy the sunset, good conversation and the traditional local pintxos. One option is Los Txopos. You can try the pintxo de tortilla de patatas (potato omelette) and the rabas (squid).
After dinner, pick up the car to go back home after a trip full of beautiful coastal scenery.
