Gateau, Basque Museum, and a Dose of Game of Thrones

You can't visit the Basque region of Spain without trying a Gateau Basque. This traditional desert is made with almond flour and has a black cherry or pastry cream filling. Find yourself a slice before you leave San Sebastian.

A visit to Monte Igueldo is a must when you're visiting San Sebastian. The views are unparalleled. You can either take the Funicular up the hill from Funikular Plaza, or drive up the back of the hill by the amusement park.

Grab yourself some lunch while in Guernica, as you'll need the fuel for your hike in the afternoon. Sasoie has a great selection of pintxos - so eat as much or as little as you wish.

Follow lunch with a visit to the Museum of the Basque Country, which offers a glimpse into the politics, spirituality and history of the Basque region. Time to have your very own Dragonstone experience at San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. There are lots of Game of Thrones filming locations in northern Spain, check out Zumaia (Gipuzkoa) if you fancy adding another stop on this road trip. The hike down to Gaztelugatxe is steep, so only for those without mobility issues. There is a great viewpoint halfway down if you want to see the place, without hiking all the way over the causeway and up the steps to the hermitage.

Lean into the chilled out beach vibe of Bakio by eating at this taverna. Seafood is a speciality.
